Title: In defence of the Thirteenth Doctor and Series 11
Creator: [tumblr.com profile] sapphichymns
Rating: G
Word Count/Length/Size: 2,421 words
Creator's Summary: There has been a lot of rhetoric about the state of the show and it’ll probably continue no matter what the show does (that’s Doctor Who for ya). But 1 year later, why not have a new look at the Thirteenth Doctor and Series 11 and some of the criticisms it received?

By the way, this will be quite long so buckle up!
Characters/Pairing: Thirteenth Doctor, Graham O’Brien, Ryan Sinclair, Yasmin Khan
Warnings/Notes: -

Reasons for reccing: This is a really thorough analysis that looks into some of the criticisms against series 11 of Doctor Who and discusses their merits and the narrative reasons why those changes that received criticisms were made. The essay analyzes the dramatic shift between series 10 and series 11 and defends its purpose. It also offers some decent commentary of the characters and their development (or lack thereof). It’s a great essay to read in preparation of series 12.

Rating: G
Word Count/Length/Size: 958 words
Creator's Summary: there’s a lot to unpack out of the DW s12 trailers, but personally I’m most eager to see what’s going on with Graham asking both, “Who are you, Doc?” and, “What have you brought here, Doctor?”

like I hope it’s not some weird fake-out where 13 has brought some really trash cake and Graham’s like “what have you brought, even I can’t eat this” because Chibbers has been building up to the gang-fam finally questioning the Dr in a slow-burn sort of way since last series.
Characters/Pairing: Thirteenth Doctor, Yazmin Khan, Graham O’Brien, Ryan Sinclair
Warnings/Notes: -

Reasons for reccing: This is fantastic analysis that delves into the current Team Tardis’ characters, explaining why the companions never truly questioned or challenged the Doctor and why and how the Doctor has been hiding the darker parts of herself (and her world). And how the series 12 trailer hints at a change in that with the companions facing real dangers and seeing the other elements of the Doctor.

Title: Why the 13th Doctor is more emotionally stable than her 4 predecessors (9 to 12) and why she’s the timeless child
Creator: [tumblr.com profile] strangerfromthesea
Rating: G
Word Count/Length/Size: 1,170 words
Creator's Summary: The timeless child references. I remember at the time people were really harping on that like because it did sound very ominous and I really liked it, we thought it was going to be a story arc. It didn’t end up being but I think it was very self-explanatory too - I think the Doctor is the timeless child, and they were inside her head seeing her, seeing who the Doctor is, and then the Doctor says “get out of my head” so I think that’s what it was, but I think the remnants also saw Gallifrey, just because of the reference to the Doctor as a child, and her still being a child, almost, searching and roaming the universe and yet probably internally a child longing for a family - and maybe that’s why she’s very eager about Graham, Yaz and Ryan and calling them “Fam” - specifically, an emphasis on family.
Characters/Pairing: Thirteenth Doctor
Warnings/Notes: -

Reasons for reccing: This is an interesting meta analysis about the Thirteenth Doctor and how she differs from her predecessors in New Who. She's far more emotionally stable and doesn't have the same darkness and irritability that the other Doctors had. Thirteen has been "reborn" as she moves on from the trauma of the previous Doctors and has a bit of a child-like innocence to her. It's a nice character analysis of Thirteen and helps explain why she's so different from the previous Doctor's and how her character signifies a change with Chibnall moving away from the elements of the past Doctor.

Creator: [tumblr.com profile] novantinuum
Rating: G
Word Count/Length/Size: 779 words
Creator's Summary: I find that I am in two minds about the Doctor’s “lighter” nature this season, really- but mostly I think the reason so many fans are left wanting is because we’re still subconsciously expecting a highly traumatized post Time War Doctor, when the story has long moved on entirely from those threads and is now taking a moment to allow the Doctor a lease of new life. A breath of fresh air.
Characters/Pairing:  Thirteenth Doctor
Warnings/Notes: N/A

Reasons for reccing: While I overall enjoyed series 11, a lot more than most people I think, I certainly had my issues with it; primarily how the Doctor doesn't seem to have that inner darkness that plague the Doctor throughout the ninth and twelfth incarnations due to the trauma of the Time War. And this meta analyses how Thirteen represents the acceptance of that loss, of overcoming it, moving on, and letting go—so it's unfitting for us to expect the same level of angst and darkness when she represents a return to the Doctor's optimism. I'm still yearning for some Dark!Doctor moments—and I certainly think it would be unfitting for the Doctor to never struggle with her darkness, as recovery doesn't mean the scars aren't there—but I like this meta because it reminds me to look at this Doctor as a long line of character development and a sign of progress for the Doctor.

Title: The Moffat Era and Monikers: ‘The Girl Who Waited’ and ‘The Impossible Girl’ in Context
Creator: [tumblr.com profile] tillthenexttimedoctor
Rating: gen
Word Count/Length/Size: 2603 words
Creator's Summary: n/a
Characters/Pairings: Amy Pond, Clara Oswald
Warnings/Notes: none

Reasons for reccing: This is one of those pieces of meta that really shifted my view of the show, because it gave me a handle on the Eleventh Doctor era and its companions. Having loved Martha and Donna, I didn't really warm to Amy or season seven Clara (fell in love with her only in season eight) and this text managed to change my attitude and made me appreciate their story arcs. Key quote: "RTD era titles signified the final stage in constructing a character, whereas in the Moffat era they represent a character’s beginning and serve as a place of deconstruction."

Title: N/A
Creator: [tumblr.com profile] ileolai
Rating: G
Word Count/Length/Size: 529 words
Creator's Summary: I’d thought RTD’s characterization of the Master was All Wrong but thinking abt it retroactively, post-Missy, it’s making a lot more sense?
Characters/Pairing: Simm’s Master, Missy (Gomez)
Warnings/Notes: N/A

Reasons for reccing: A really interesting bit of meta that discusses Simm’s interaction of the Master. The meta is a bit of a ramble and isn’t super in-depth but it brings up interesting ideas, such as the Master’s sense of self-importance and how that connects to a sort-of masculinity and how that relates Missy’s rejection of masculinity and embracement of femininity (ie. Time Lady). This is an older meta and the writer mentions how they might make a more in depth analysis of this subject, but sadly I couldn’t find it (Tumblr has a horrible search function) if it was ever written.

Title: River Song Mini Meta
Creator: [tumblr.com profile] hedonistbyheart
Rating: G
Word Count/Length/Size: 252 words
Creator's Summary: I think the reason that I love River Song so much, other than the fact that Alex Kingston is beautiful and talented and I’m a useless bisexual, is that her character is poetic.

Her story doesn’t quite make sense, not when looked at like a strict progression, not when put into strict analytical boxes, but it’s so full of poetic beats and echoes (like a dying neural relay).
Characters/Pairing: River Song
Warnings/Notes: N/A

Reasons for reccing: A short and lovely meta that highlights the poetic beauty of River's story because of all of its timey-wimey twists and turns and how it fits perfectly with her character, story, and origin.

Title: I Know What The Midnight Entity Was
Creator: [tumblr.com profile] whatwecanfic
Rating: G
Word Count/Length/Size: 777 words
Creator's Summary: N/A
Characters/Pairing: Midnight entity (if that counts as a character?)
Warnings/Notes: A meta on the “villain” from the episode, “Midnight,” where the Doctor gets his voice stolen from a mysterious creature who somehow survived on the planet Midnight when nothing was thought to be able to.

Reasons for reccing: “Midnight” is one of my absolute favorite episodes of Doctor Who. The Midnight entity was a really terrifying figure precisely because we had no idea what it was. Even the Doctor was clueless. So, I usually don’t care for any theories on what the creature is because having an answer ruins the mystery and terror, but this meta offers an intriguing answer that I feel actually adds even more depth to the episode

Word Count/Length/Size: Around 500 words, three gifs
Creator's Summary: N/A
Characters/Pairing: Thirteenth Doctor
Warnings/Notes: -

Reasons for reccing: I’m really enjoying the Thirteenth Doctor so far, but personally I found her to be a little bit lacking in her first series and am hoping that she is given more in depth characterization in the next series. And this meta really helps flesh out Thirteen more in my mind and analyze aspects of her character that are hidden slightly under the surface which may come more to light in the next series.

Title: REGENERATION AS A CHOICE – How the Doctor choosing their faces creates a 2,000-year long character arc
Creator: [tumblr.com profile] armageddeon-generation
Rating: G
Word Count/Length/Size: around 5000 words, several gifs are used throughout the essay. I wouldn’t recommend opening it up on any slow devices that tend to get overwhelmed.
Creator's Summary: I headcanon that each new face the Doctor gets represents something they subconsciously need or want, and all together their 13 faces form a character arc 2,000 years in the making, as the Doctor wrestled with their own identity.
Characters/Pairing: The Doctor (All Main Canon Doctors: 2-8, War, 9-13)
Warnings/Notes: Spoilers for the entire show, a bulk of the analysis goes to NewWho with the Classic Doctor’s having noticeably less commentary.

Reasons for reccing: This is a really comprehensive analysis on the Doctor’s “2000-year long character arc” and offers some great insight and analysis into the Doctor’s characters. The format of the meta is rather casual with all points being densely made in bullet points, which helps ease understanding of a long history of the Doctor by making each point concisely and quickly regarding the Doctor’s characterization. And the bullet-point format makes the long post so much easier to read, I know I personally struggle with reading long paragraphs due to my ADHD, so while it is a thorough meta it isn’t an intensive one.
