Title: We Had a Place in That Garden
Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] ChevalierPelerin
Rating: Gen
Word Count/Length/Size: 9,262 words.
Creator's Summary: The Doctor finds out Charley has made a name for herself since she left. Post-Canon/AU Reunion
Characters/Pairings: Eighth Doctor, Charley Pollard, Liv Chenka, Helen Sinclair.
Warnings/Notes: None. The fic is archive-locked.

Reasons for reccing: I'm still longing for Big Finish to give us an Eight and Charley reunion, so this fic, which does just that beautifully, made my day and I had to share it! The characterisation and dialogue is note perfect, and it's sharply observed, fun, and everything I'd hope for from these two getting a chance to meet up again and finally discover the truth about how they parted.

Title: Doctor & Clara: Lovely
Creator: [youtube.com profile] SunnyVids
Rating: PG
Word Count/Length/Size: 3.33 mins
Creator's Summary: "It's the oldest story in the universe, this one or any other. Boy and girl fall in love, get separated by events. War, politics, accidents in time. She's thrown out of the hex, or he's thrown into it. Since then they've been yearning for each other across time and space, across dimensions. This isn't a ghost story, it's a love story!"
Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor/Clara Oswald, Twelfth Doctor/Clara Oswald
Warnings/Notes: None, other than spoilers for Clara's entire run.

Reasons for reccing: Beautifully edited together, this is a amazing meta-piece in only 3 and a half minutes. My usual preference for vids is music vids, but this is so sharply observed and well put together it made me go oh in exactly the way that good meta should, and then gave me all the feels.

Title: an evening coming in across the fields

Word Count/Length/Size: 1788 words
Creator's Summary: “Hi,” Tegan says, mock-formal. “My name’s Tegan Jovanka and I was possessed by a god from beyond the dawn of time. Twice.” Mel laughs, the tension suddenly gone. “Melanie Bush,” she returns, “and I was possessed by the god of death. Just once, mind you.” ~ Mel, after Empire of Death
Characters/Pairings: Melanie Bush, Tegan Jovanka
Warnings/Notes: Spoilers for s1/14/whatever; emotional trauma from possession.

Reasons for reccing: I came across this tonight and it filled a need I hadn't realised I had for some sort of fic dealing with Mel, post "The Empire of Death". It's well-drawn, beautifully written, and a lovely look at these two opposites bonding over unwanted shared experiences.

Title: 500 Miles
Creator: relative-dimension-in-space
Rating: G
Word Count/Length/Size: 3.38 mins
Creator's Summary: Another era tribute, this time for the Troughton years. This was so much fun to work on and it's making me want to binge some of these stories again. I love this era and these characters so much and I really, desperately hope that more of it gets found with time. There's a wealth of character work and physical comedy that's just gone and it's so upsetting to not get to see more of these performances. I'd do anything (including walk 500 miles and 500 more) to one day get to watch even more of this beloved, incredible era of the show.
Characters/Pairings: Second Doctor, Polly Wright, Ben Jackson, Jamie McCrimmon, Victoria Waterfield & Zoe Heriot.
Warnings/Notes: None, save for obligatory brief War Games heartache in passing.

Reasons for reccing: I loved this vidder's First Doctor era tribute and they just posted one for the Second Doctor's era and it's also great! It's a perfect match up of song and clips, with exactly the right feel for this Doctor and his companions, and showcases all over again why the loss of every single minute of on-screen Troughton is a crime. In short, it's downright adorable and I hope watching it brightens your day the way it did mine.

Rating: All ages
Word Count/Length/Size: 3.29
Creator's Summary: Happy to present my first ever video! I've wanted to make them for years now and finally have the means to. The First Doctor era of Doctor Who is an easy place for me to start because I know it like the back of my hand and it's uncomplicated to edit - I'll definitely be attempting more intensive edits in the future, but I'm very happy to start here with something I love so much. I've wished a video to this song existed for a long time and it's exciting to actually get to see it now that I've done it! Hope you enjoy :)
Characters/Pairings: First Doctor, Ian Chesterton, Barbara Wright, Susan Foreman, Vicki, Steven Taylor, Katarina, Sara Kingdom, Dodo Chaplet, Polly Wright, Ben Jackson.
Warnings/Notes: One brief broken/flashing cut towards the end.

Reasons for reccing: YT dropped this into my feed and I was instantly charmed - it's a really sweet and heart-warming whole era vid for the First Doctor. It's very well done, the song choice works beautifully and the found family celebratory vibe is threaded with the minor note of One's losses. I've not come across anything like this ensemble tribute for this era before, or certainly not so well done, and I've already watched it about six times.

Characters/Pairings: Liz Shaw, Eighth Doctor
Warnings/Notes: None.

Reasons for reccing: For 1991, the year that saw the release of Spearhead From Space on VHS and the deaths of both Innes Lloyd and Gerry Davis, two of the people responsible for the Cybermen, a lovely piece that features Liz Shaw and Cybermen, or the after-effects of meeting them.

Eight runs into Liz and they both get a chance to discuss past trauma and lost friends - it's a thoughtful, excellently done vignette for the two of them - they make a great combination.

Creator: Acb Tyson

Creator's Summary: I made this at the end of 2019. Looking back on 56 years of Doctor Who history.
Characters/Pairings: All Doctors and companions to 2019.
Warnings/Notes: None.

Reasons for reccing: Happy 60th, Doctor Who! A multi-era vid and a bonus rec for 1963, this is a very simple idea and seems to be a bit of a vidding meme (other shows' credits to the score from Endgame) but it's really lovely and this one, which goes all the way from 1963 to 2019 (and back again) must have taken some doing. Time to salute all the actors whose work over 60 years has made DW into the legend that it is!

Three ficlets for 1990, because I was looking for something connected to Remembrance of the Daleks and/or An Unearthly Child and ran into these three, which are all short and sweet, so here's a little bundle of 1990-related goodness:

Creator: Joan Milligan

Word Count/Length/Size: 303 words

Characters/Pairings: Seventh Doctor
Warnings/Notes: None.

Reasons for reccing: For 1990, the year that the novelisation of Remembrance of the Daleks was published, paving the way for the New Adventures. This is a beautiful little tag for the serial, with Seven making some reflections on his behaviour that maybe illuminates his reasons for his tendency to plan and manipulate - something that would get stretched even further in the upcoming VNAs.

Creator's Summary: Summary of the Third Doctor’s Era, 100% based on this post made by timewalkxr. (Reccer's note: original text post no longer at the link.)
Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart
Warnings/Notes: None, other than the Brig wanting shoot things as usual.

Reasons for reccing: For the year 1972, when this era was in full swing. This is a delightfully funny comic strip summary of the Third Doctor's era, excellently drawn here - the Doctor tells the Brig not to shoot the thing, and what does the Brig do? I love the suitably army-coloured background wash and the energy Johannes VIII has given to Three's frantic attempts, in contrast to the Brigadier's stance, and it makes me laugh every time I see it (100%).

Creator's Summary: Just a happy celebration of Sacha Dhawan's Master. Music by the 8-Bit Big Band
Characters/Pairings: Dhawan Master, Thirteenth Doctor
Warnings/Notes: None.

Reasons for reccing: For the year 2020, when Sacha Dhawan arrived as the latest incarnation of the Master. This vid, as the summary says, is a delightfully laid-back and cheery celebration of a character who does little but cause murder and mayhem. It's short, fun, with a lovely flow to it throughout, and some really nifty/amusing match-ups of lyrics/music and clips. It's a great little summary of why so many of us were immediately so taken with Sacha's performance. (I especially like the Doctor's little sag at the end. Quite, indeed.)

Reasons for reccing: For 1981, the year that we first met Tegan Jovanka and the Fifth Doctor, as well as for the multi-era theme. This is a gorgeous set of haunting vignettes looking at their relationship, their bond, and its impossibility. It's a beautifully melancholic piece.

Reasons for reccing: For 2006, the year that Lucie Miller first appeared, a wonderful little tag to the end of her first season of adventures with the Doctor. Lucie, in the aftermath of Human Resources, wishes, for just one moment, that she had been 'special'. It's such a perfectly done and moving little character moment between the two - definitely one of those fics that I've packed away in my mind into being absolutely canon.

Title: Regeneration
Creator: Andriy Griffin
Rating: PG
Word Count/Length/Size: 4.48 mins
Creator's Summary: This October sees the next great change in Doctor Who, so this is to remember all the times we've said a tearful farewell to our beloved Doctors. In tribute to all the amazing people who've worked on this show on & off for the last 60 years, and in memory to Bill, Pat and Jon, the three who started it all. Hope you enjoy.
Characters/Pairings: Doctors 1-13, plus various other companions and villains.
Warnings/Notes: Regeneration stories, so (temporary) death etc, some guns & gunfire.

Reasons for reccing: It's Doctor Who's anniversary - 59 years old today! So I had to rec a multi-Doctor vid, and this one fitted the bill perfectly. It focuses on the goodbyes (and hellos) of regeneration stories over the decades, featuring all the Doctors and a good many companions and adversaries (especially those in the Regeneration episodes), and at the end brings us right up to date with Thirteen. And isn't one of the greatest strengths of this old show of ours, the notion of regeneration - the ability to continually change and grow that's let it carry on for decades, and even regenerate itself after what looked like the end? This is a beautiful exploration of that, in loss and grief - and the joy of renewal.

Happy birthday, Doctor Who! ♥

Warnings/Notes: Some v short clips/fast editing.

Reasons for reccing: It's the show's 58th anniversary! And here's a brilliant all-eras vid to celebrate it (up to time of making, but it gets Thirteen in there, too). Reasons for reccing: It's rare to find many fanworks for Five & Tegan these days, but this is a lovely one. It's a very sweet piece of art (of Tegan kissing the Doctor's forehead), but unsentimental, and the style works well for the subject, with the contrast of the moon & stars glow illuminating their outlines with the muted evening palette. Surely guaranteed to make you go 'aww' a least a bit, whatever your take on their relationship.

Characters/Pairings: Evelyn Smythe, Sixth Doctor
Warnings/Notes: None.

Reasons for reccing: It's a wonderfully expressive black & white sketch or illustration of the two of them - Evelyn, busy inside with a book, but the Doctor's waiting outside in the rain. It's excellent (and, with the weather starting to pour, and things about to change, seasonal, too, I think).

Characters/Pairings: Fourth Doctor/Sarah Jane Smith, the Brigadier, Harry Sullivan, Drax, Romana II
Warnings/Notes: As it says, a vampire AU - mind the tags.

Reasons for reccing: This is a wonderfully dark, creepy and funny fic that meets both of this month's themes in one excellent work. I love the energy and humour of it (particularly Singe's capturing of Sarah's voice), as well as the sinister weirdness of the concept.
