Title: Summary of the Third Doctor's Era 100%
Creator: [tumblr.com profile] johannvesviii
Rating: PG
Word Count/Length/Size: N/A (short 3 panel comic style art)
Creator's Summary: Summary of the Third Doctor’s Era, 100% based on this post made by timewalkxr. (Reccer's note: original text post no longer at the link.)
Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart
Warnings/Notes: None, other than the Brig wanting shoot things as usual.

Reasons for reccing: For the year 1972, when this era was in full swing. This is a delightfully funny comic strip summary of the Third Doctor's era, excellently drawn here - the Doctor tells the Brig not to shoot the thing, and what does the Brig do? I love the suitably army-coloured background wash and the energy Johannes VIII has given to Three's frantic attempts, in contrast to the Brigadier's stance, and it makes me laugh every time I see it (100%).

Warnings/Notes: None

Reasons for reccing: For 1975, the year Davros, the Dalek creator was introduced. This is a fun vid to a fun song, with the images matching the words. And the addition of some fun hashtags.

Title: Three Interviews the Brigadier Gave (And One He Didn’t)
Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] BerylGrey | [tumblr.com profile] seekingthespheres
Rating: G
Word Count/Length/Size: 1807 words
Creator's Summary: It took a few tries for The Brigadier to find a suitable assistant for the Doctor after Liz Shaw left.
Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor, the Brigadier, original characters
Warnings/Notes: none (unless maybe mild period-typical sexism in hiring)

Reasons for reccing:
For 1971 and the introduction of Miss Jo Grant, a look at three of UNIT’s less successful hires…

Written as a fill for my prompt, "Did UNIT try any other new assistants for the Doctor in between Liz and Jo? Did any of them last longer than a day?"

This is set just before Jo’s arrival and I think is extremely plausible context—both for the Doctor’s skepticism of a new assistant and for how quickly he becomes putty in her hands. It’s also hilarious!

Title: Save the Date
Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] astrogirl
Rating: Gen
Word Count/Length/Size: 1,811 words
Creator's Summary: The Brigadier has quite a few messages on his answering machine today. And all of them are from the same person. Well, more or less.
Characters/Pairings: Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, Doris Lethbridge-Stewart, Third Doctor, Fourth Doctor, Fifth Doctor, Sixth Doctor, Seventh Doctor
Warnings/Notes: none

Reasons for reccing: The Brigadier, retired and just returned from a holiday, finds a lot of messages from the Doctor on his answering machine. This was written for the "Unsent Letters" exchange in 2022 and the concept is just great, super well executed, and so much fun to read. Lovely and hilarious.

(It is set sometime after the Seventh Doctor episode "Battlefield" - from the Brigadier's point of view, anyway! - which means it technically takes place in 1989, BUT, since that year is already covered, I'm submitting it for 1968, the year when one Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart first appeared. Also fits this month's multi-era theme!)

Characters/Pairings: The Brigadier,   Jamie,  Zoe, the TARDIS, The Doctor (2nd)
Warnings/Notes:  None, except... this deals with a certain character's death that's canon.

Reasons for reccing: For the box "Death" on my Bingo card.  Which I do believe gives me a Bingo :P

This is lovely and heartbreaking,  but a fitting tribute to a wonderful character.

Rating: Teen
Word Count/Length/Size: 18,422
Creator's Summary: In 1978, UNIT headquarters is under siege from an old enemy, whilst in 2016 the final part of his plan comes together. Can UNIT work together, 40 years apart, to prevent time from changing forever?
Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor, Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart, Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, The Master (Delgado), Petronella Osgood, Josh Carter, Jo Grant, John Benton, Mike Yates, The Doctor's TARDIS
Warnings/Notes: Some TV appropriate violence, non graphically described.

Reasons for reccing: It's a really interesting story, cleverly told in two different UNIT time periods.

Title: Doctor Who and the Never Christmas
Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] imnotokaywiththerunning
Rating: General
Word Count/Length/Size: 6516 words
Creator's Summary: Alternately titled Jo Grant: Operation Christmas
Jo just wants to have a nice Christmas party for UNIT but the aliens didn't get the memo.
Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor, Jo Grant, Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart
Warnings/Notes: None

Reasons for reccing: Christmas fics are best read in May. It's a fun one, which seems like it's just Jo trying to get UNIT into the Christmas spirit, but then aliens turn up. And then things get more interesting leading up to Christmas. It's more than a fluffy Christmas fic.

Title: Long Leggity Beasty
Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] Singe_Addams (Singe)
Rating: Teen
Word Count/Length/Size: 4804 words
Creator's Summary: A Halloween story! This is set the October after the Doctor abruptly and mysteriously leaves Sarah Jane. His return leaves her feeling somewhat drained. (Yes, vampire AU.)
Characters/Pairings: Fourth Doctor/Sarah Jane Smith, the Brigadier, Harry Sullivan, Drax, Romana II
Warnings/Notes: As it says, a vampire AU - mind the tags.

Reasons for reccing: This is a wonderfully dark, creepy and funny fic that meets both of this month's themes in one excellent work. I love the energy and humour of it (particularly Singe's capturing of Sarah's voice), as well as the sinister weirdness of the concept. It's a really unusual and entertaining read, and I highly recommend it even if maybe you're not always into AUs. It also fits the seasonal challenge as well.

Title: Overheard at the UNIT Christmas party, 2009 (probably)
Creator: sinyjenni (usuallyhats)
Rating: General
Word Count/Length/Size: 592 words
Creator's Summary: Conversations overheard at the UNIT Christmas party.
Characters/Pairings: Sarah Jane Smith, Liz Shaw, Cliff Jones, Martha Jones, Harry Sullivan, Jo Grant, sergeant Benton, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart
Warnings/Notes: None

Reasons for reccing: It's a fun little fic set in the future where we hear snippets of conversations between people who (used to) work for UNIT. The snippets are just enough to give you an idea of what they're getting up to and show you how those who haven't met on screen would get on.

I'd been planning to rec this for the letter "U" anyway - UNIT counts as a character, doesn't it? - and now it also fits the monthly theme, because it has quite a bit of the Brig in it!

Title: The Annual UNIT Picnic
Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] primsong
Rating: gen
Word Count/Length/Size: 3515 words
Creator's Summary: The Brigadier and UNIT enjoy their annual summer picnic in spite of the Doctor, who is of course not really responsible for what happens. Third Doctor and Jo Grant, also featuring Yates and Benton.
Characters/Pairings: Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Mike Yates, John Benton, Third Doctor, Jo Grant, lots of unnamed UNIT soldiers
Warnings/Notes: none

Reasons for reccing: This is completely hilarious. The annual UNIT picnic does not go as planned (or maybe it does?) and the fact that the Doctor "improved" the provisions ends up being the least of the Brig's problems. The story is well written and paints a lot of very funny images that made me laugh out loud, which is much appreciated these days.

Characters/Pairings: Sarah Jane Smith, Luke Smith, Sky Smith, Clyde Langer, Rani Chandra, Maria Jackson, Jo Grant, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart.
Warnings/Notes: None.

Reasons for reccing: For the "spin-off" square on my card. This is deftly edited and, more importantly, it's a piece of pure sunshine, guaranteed to make the viewer smile too. Want to indulge in a bit of SJA nostalgia for a little while? This vid is just the ticket.

Title: Kate and the Jo Grant Spinach Strategy
Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] kaffyrutsky
Rating: General Audiences
Word Count/Length/Size: 1998 words
Creator's Summary: Sometimes it's important to turn something very exciting into very boring spinach. Jo Grant's first meeting with Kate Lethbridge-Stewart.
Characters/Pairings: Jo Grant, Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, Third Doctor, Fiona Lethbridge-Stewart
Warnings/Notes: none

Reasons for reccing: It's a sweet and amusing look at Jo and Kate meeting, when Jo was working at UNIT and Kate was a child visiting her dad. It shows how difficult things were in the Brigadier's life and where Kate gets the sense of adventure that leads to her working for UNIT.

Title: Life Unexpected
Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] coralysendria
Rating: Gen
Word Count/Length/Size: 10.039 words
Creator's Summary: "You know, I've been up and down your timeline, meeting all those silly people who died to keep you alive."
It wasn't just strangers that ended up in the Nethersphere. Some of the Doctor's friends ended up there, too. But the Doctor's friends are still the Doctor's friends, even if they're no longer conventionally alive, so they're not necessarily going to follow Missy's plans...

Characters/Pairings: Missy, Seb, Jack Harkness, Oswin Oswald, Osgood, Jenny Flint, Adric, Lobus Caecilius, Harriet Jones, Simm!Master, the Brigadier (Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart), River Song, Amy Pond, Rory Williams
Warnings/Notes: canonical and extrapolated character deaths, afterlife

Reasons for reccing: Wonderful and inventive exploration of an uncharted corner of canon. I love this for the wide and sometimes surprising array of characters who end up meeting Missy and/or Seb, who react to the Nethersphere in different ways, and who sometimes even meet each other. They all feel very much like themselves and the story manages to combine a lot of different beats, from funny and nostalgic, over poignant and surprising, to uncanny and sad.

Characters/Pairings: Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Jo Grant, Sergeant Benton, The Doctor (3rd), The Master (Delgado)

Reasons for reccing: Well since the monthly themes are Third Doctor and Fluff,  this seemed fitting.  This story is a lot of fun. Three, Jo, and co. interacting with a child in a situation that feels like something from the UNIT era.  And, without giving anything away, there's a positively excellent moment involving the Master that made me smile.

Creator's Summary: Liz has unfinished business with the Brigadier. She thought she’d accepted it would have to stay that way…
Characters/Pairings: Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart/Liz Shaw
Warnings/Notes: None.

Reasons for reccing: Another one for my favourite pairings challenge. I love Brig/Liz; it's full of repression, snark and dedication to duty despite any UST. This one, though, is set after Liz's time at UNIT and gives them a chance to maybe do some resolving at last, and it's excellent.

Creator's Summary: Sometimes all a person can do is move forward and hope for the best.
Characters/Pairings: Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart/Liz Shaw, Sergeant Benton, Third Doctor.
Warnings/Notes: None.

Reasons for reccing: I love Brig/Liz as a pairing and it was really hard to narrow this down to one fic for the challenge, but this piece is gorgeously written with vivid voices, and simultaneously showcases how this ship works so well and why it might well never work at all in a way that feels very true to both Liz and the Brigadier.

Word Count/Length/Size: 4141 words
Creator's Summary: Liz Shaw persuades the Doctor to go house hunting, with unexpected consequences.
Characters/Pairings: Liz Shaw, Third Doctor, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart
Warnings/Notes: None

Reasons for reccing: Another for my Liz Shaw claim - this is an unusual and thoughtful piece that has Liz helping the Doctor go househunting while unconvering an unexpected side to her own nature. It provides both a sideways-type missing story as well as being a lovely look at the friendship between Liz and Three.

Creator's Summary: this is a personal tribute to the beautiful Caroline John who portrayed Miss Elizabeth Shaw in 'Doctor Who', who sadly passed away on 5th June 2012.
Characters/Pairings: Liz Shaw, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Third Doctor
Warnings/Notes: None

Reasons for reccing: Another one for the current Seasonal Challenge! This a beautiful tribute that effectively showcases the strengths of Liz's character as a scientist in her own right. I was planning to try and find something a little less sad (this was made in the wake of Caroline John's death, so I should probably attach a tissue warning for those who need it) but it turns out the best is still the best.

Title: Going Home
Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] phantomlistener
Rating: Teen
Word Count/Length/Size: 8143 words
Creator's Summary: A life can't be summed in a few tiny moments, but it can, possibly, be understood. Elizabeth Shaw through the years. Crossover with the Dr Who spin-off P.R.O.B.E. but no prior knowledge of it is required.
Characters/Pairings: Liz Shaw, Third Doctor, Patricia Haggard, Sarah Jane Smith, Brigadier Lethbrige-Stewart.
Warnings/Notes: None.

Reasons for reccing: This is a beautifully written look at Liz across her life, filling in backstory, post-canon and side-adventures with insight and depth. It was one of the first pieces I thought of when I claimed the character. It includes some mention of the fanmade PROBE videos, but it works just fine if you don't know them, as the author says. (I haven't seen any of them myself, so I can vouch for that). If you love Liz, you'll love this.

Creator's Summary: When an opera critic is torn limb from limb, the Brigadier suspects that more than just bruised egos are at play.
Characters/Pairings: Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Jo Grant, The Master (Delgado), UNIT
Warnings/Notes: n/a

Reasons for reccing: Three, Jo, and UNIT team up to stop the Master from one of his schemes, this time set at an opera house. I love that this fic has a feel of a Three-era episode of Classic Who, right down to not being impressed by the Master's many pseudonyms.

Creator: neveralarch
Rating: All Ages
Word Count/Length/Size: 6103
Creator's Summary: "How does the TARDIS work?” asks Ace.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Barbara Wright, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Erimem, Hex Schofield, Ian Chesterton, Jamie McCrimmon, Mel Bush, Romana II, Susan Foreman, The Doctor (1st), The Doctor (2nd), The Doctor (3rd), The Doctor (4th), The Doctor (5th), The Doctor (6th), The Doctor (7th)
Warnings/Notes: None

Reasons for reccing: The TARDIS is a ridiculous, wonderful place to live in, because -  at least according to this fic - it only works according to how its inhabitants think it should work. And I think that's wonderful. This fic is a gorgeous fluffy romp through the inner workings of the TARDIS, with flashback cameos from just about every Classic era Doctor. And of course, it's framed by the storylet of Ace adjusting to life in the TARDIS, and some lovely flashes of insight into her relationship with the Doctor. Plus, the humor in it is wonderful, and so is the characterization - there are some really good lines in there.

Title: La Vie Boheme
Creator: Doctor Tam | Solo By Choice
Rating: All ages
Word Count/Length/Size: 2075 words
Creator's Summary: A non-linear character study: "He composes a symphony for accordion and dog whistle, goes pike fishing in the Thames, and gets a sunburn on his nose. After all, the universe isn't his responsibility."
Characters/Pairings: Fourth Doctor, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Sarah Jane Smith, Harry Sullivan, Leela, Romana I, Romana II, K9.
Warnings/Notes: None.

Reasons for reccing: Wonderful, funny, and bittersweet non-linear look at Four, and the events and people that make up his incarnation. It's lovely, and the out of order nature of it is completely perfect, both in the bits that make it funnier and the bits that make it hurt the harder.
