In fact, the Doctor isn’t even in the fic for the first several chapters (though she is a major character once she does appear), meaning that the beginning has a lot of focus on Thirteen’s companions getting to know other companions, and the other companions getting to know each other. The main plot itself is very well done and well paced, timely-wimey and tangled without ever getting too confusing. I read this as it came out and was excited to read each update.

Reasons for reccing: I was fascinated by these because you don't usually get so much focus on the space surrounding the characters in fanart; the Doctor standing in the middle of each of these is almost dwarfed by the places he's in and I love that the Tardis can be seen in the back both times, almost like a portal that led the Doctor there. I also love that you don't necessarily get what's going on with the surroundings at first glance, at least I didn't (clicking on the zoom-in button is definitely recommended). And not only do they reference key episodes/villains, the colour schemes fit very well with each Doctor and with what the cinematography was doing during their respective eras (blue-ish fairytale lighting / brown-ish earthy-industrial atmosphere).

I’ve read a couple of brilliant fics recently that perfectly fit for the “Reunion” square on my Bingo card.

The author does a great job of “ageing” Rose and the Rose we see is one that has lived on this parallel world with Tentoo for several years and she has grown and changed. This is really evident is her interactions with the Doctor and especially Yaz, as she remembers what it was like to be Yaz. It’s a really lovely Thasmin fic that acknowledges the history between the Doctor and Rose in a really fulfilling and satisfying way.

It’s lovely to see Thirteen here meet up with her old companions, especially Martha because Ten didn’t treat her the best and Thirteen is able to apologize and offer some closure between the two of them.

I read this fic a while ago, but I forgot all about it until I got my bingo card and saw “Historical” and remembered this brilliant little gem that I read a couple of months ago.

The romance between Joan Redfern and John Smith was incredibly sad when it came time for John Smith to say goodbye and for the Doctor to return, this fic explores that through another angle with Yasmin falling in love the Doctor’s human camouflage Mae Smith. The romance between these two is really genuine and heartfelt, making the Doctor’s return a painfully bittersweet moment for Yaz.

Reasons for reccing: Ooooh, what can I say about this fic without spoiling it? It's a really wonderful and fascinating fic that brings with it a great mystery with some mild horror elements and a great deal of intrigue. It explores the consequences of the Time War in a very new and exciting way and it explores a lot of intriguing "timey-wimey" elements. It truly feels like it could be a series long arc in Doctor Who. The basic concept of the fic is that the Doctor discovers that Yaz's timeline is all "wrong" and that time is very much "broken" for her, so she attempts to find out what exactly that it. I can't say anything more without spoilers, but this is a fic well worth a read.

Yaz is bullied and later hurt by her father, these are prominent elements of the fic but they are used to support the main relationship which is the friendship between Clara and Yaz, so it's never too vivid or graphic in its focus or depiction.

Reasons for reccing: I really enjoy seeing old and new companions interact with each other and this fic does a great job of that by portraying a very complex and deep relationship between Yaz and Clara. Clara is a mentor and teacher to Yaz and it's lovely to see that side of Clara. This fic takes place over several years and the author did a great job of creating this narrative and having Yaz grow up over time, from when she was a young girl all the way to when she meets the Doctor. It's a really fantastic fic.

Warnings/Notes: Emotional Abuse and Dubious Consent. The Thirteenth Doctor is portrayed very darkly in this fic and is emotionally abusive to Yaz. There are several uncomfortable sex scenes where boundaries are not properly defined and the Doctor often oversteps those boundaries and Yaz often feels incapable of saying no to the Doctor even when she wants to.

Reasons for reccing: This is an absolutely brilliantly written fic. It is of a very dark nature and the Doctor in this fic is almost unrecognizable from the one we know in the show. Almost. It is a very difficult thing to twist a character so much but still make them feel true to themself and I feel like this writer has done that. The Doctor portrayed in this fic is selfish and emotionally abusive, but it never feels OOC and feels like a realistic dimension of the Doctor that could exist. This fic does a brilliant job of portraying the emotionally abusive relationship between the Doctor and Yaz with a lot of nuance and complexity, it feels incredibly real and raw. And I think it does a great job of representing the type of justifications that people do in such a relationship. It's a delightfully twisted and painful fic that treats its subject matter with great deftness.

Reasons for reccing: For the romance theme, I wanted to rec this adorable Thirteen/Yaz fic, published in this year's Chocolate Box exchange, by our dear mod, which deserves all the attention it can get. As I may have said before, I have a soft spot for romance fics that include plenty of the humour, mayhem, things going wrong and running around that belongs to the show. I also like it when romance involving the Doctor shows the Doctor not quite knowing how to do human things but trying anyway. This is one of the best if not the best I've read of that sort, and Thirteen and Yaz are charmingly themselves, it's hilarious, and it's happy and feel-good. I'm pretty sure it works whether you actually ship them or not!

It also contains lines such as: Although, she had to admit that now she wasn’t only sort of jealous of a time machine, she was kind of jealous of a universe disguised as a frog and entities unknown who went on dates that lasted for twenty-four years. The competition was bizarre, you could say that much.

“Doctor,” said Yaz, trying to sound casually conversational, which wasn’t the easiest thing right now, “do you, er, have tentacles?”

Which should be enough to convince anyone, right?
