Time to get right into it, I guess! - this is for the seasonal challenge, of course, and my character is Bernice Summerfield! I can't wait to pull out my favorite obscure fics, and remember how much I love Benny all over again.

Title:
Among Mad People
Creator: schrodinger
Rating: All Ages
Word Count/Length/Size: 59609 words, 16 chapters
Creator's Summary: On a desert world, Benny Summerfield and her team of students are uneasy neighbors with the Interplanetary Mining Corp. But now one of her students has turned up dead, and Benny needs the Doctor's professional opinion. As usual, she's going to get more than she bargained for. Part 2 of the "Companion" series.
Characters/Pairings: Bernice Summerfield, Doctor (Author-Created), a whole host of wonderful original characters.
Warnings/Notes: Swearing, some violence.

Reasons for reccing: Way back when I was in primary school (yes, this is going to be one of those rec stories - sorry in advance) I was the sort of kid who was deeply in love with Doctor Who and its expanded universe, but was slightly too immature/flighty to actually understand it, if that makes sense. So I knew what Faction Paradox was, I knew about Anji and Fitz and Benny and Iris and everybody else, but I didn't actually.... know them. Not really. This led to a lot of really terrible (thankfully unpublished) fanfiction that I ended up writing in which I twisted everybody and everything utterly out of character and tone, and.... well! Anyway! This is my roundabout way of saying that I also had the odd tendency of going around all sort of fanfiction websites and reading fics about these characters, without ever properly reading them. That is to say, I sort of just skimmed them mindlessly, without absorbing any of the plot, and pretended I was enjoying it. Often, I'd come to a certain chapter/paragraph/section, blink back into reality, and really really enjoy that particular part. And I'd read it over and over without reading the rest of the story and pretend I knew what was going on. Yeah. I was a weird kid. Anyway, as the older, arguably wiser person I am now, I've ended up going back to these stories I skimread as a preteen and actually reading them this time. And more often than not, I'm pleasantly surprised how good they really are.

As you may have guessed by the longwinded childhood recap, 'Among Mad People' was one of these stories. (Yeah, now we're getting to the point! FINALLY!) It's a wonderfully longfic set in a universe of the author's devising, with a completely original (and ingeniously characterized) Doctor and companion and story arc. This particular story that I'm reccing is actually second in the series (which is overall titled 'Companion'), so it might be a good idea to go and read the first story first. Although both 'first' times I didn't even realize it was a series, and I think the second fic stands well on its own either way, so. Up to you, really. But honestly, schrodinger's writing is really REALLY good - it flows smoothly, the characters (original as they are) are intriguing and interesting, and you end up sympathizing with some of them even when you know you shouldn't.

Anyway, let's talk about the story itself. The main character (despite the Doctor and Alex being there) is Bernice Summerfield - a slightly older version, anyway - one who's no longer travelling with the Doctor and has a son and a life of her own. She's on an expedition on some alien planet with a whole cast of her students (who are wonderfully developed characters on their own, by the way, that you'll grow to love through the story) when problems, as they always tend to, begin to arise. And the Doctor turns up, although it's not quite the one she was expecting. To say anything else about the plot would be to spoil it, because it's a mystery on some level; one that unfolds through the course of the story in an organic and natural way, with a couple of really brilliant plot twists here and there.

But the thing that really carries the whole piece is the character interactions. I'm usually super skeptical about author-created Doctor, and author-created companions too, come to think of it. However, in the hands of a skilled author - I've come to learn - they can be pulled off admirably. And schrodinger is nothing if not a skilled author. Alex - the companion - is a poisonous, sharp-witted delight of a character, presenting a perfect foil for both Benny and the Doctor, neither of which are taking any of her nonsense. The Doctor is uniquely Doctorish in manner, but still somehow different from all other incarnations. All of his interactions with Benny were pitch-perfect, despite there... not really being a pitch to match where canon is concerned. But he is definitely the Doctor - kind, funny, sad, and has the perfect plan at the end to save everybody. And then there's Benny, who has been written ever so well in this. God. I've been trying to adequately describe how great she is for the last few minutes, and I can't come up with any coherent words to suit.

As one commenter said (and really, they've summed up my own thoughts on the story rather well): 'the whole story is worth it just for that last scene in the Library where they trade shots and Beatles lyrics'. Because oh my good god, the library scene is fantastic.

But the rest of it is great, too.

This story is (checks) over a decade old. Which is making me feel old too now. But it is definitely, one hundred percent worth a read, and I deeply encourage you to check it (and the rest of the Companion series) out - if my long-winded rambling, and the intimidating wordcount, hasn't scared you off yet! I devoured most of it over the course of two nights on my More Mature Reread, and I have no doubt that you will end up doing much the same. You will laugh. You will cry. You will whisper 'Alex, no' very softly into the hand that you have raised to your mouth to prevent yourself from gasping out loud. I know I did.

Rec bingo (card!) for the second row, fourth column prompt: 'it's not what it seems'.

Title:
Don't Worry Ace, I'm Only Dying
Creator: Kate Orman
Rating: None given. I'd say it's Teen and up.
Word Count/Length/Size: about 700 words
Summary: So. There was the phone. What was it you were supposed to do, exactly?
Characters/Pairings: Seventh Doctor, Ace McShane
Warnings/Notes: Violence, death.
Reasons for reccing: I tried to find a non-Wayback Machine link for this story, but I could not. Which is really quite a shame, because, in addition to being very hard to find, it's also very good. (And yes, this is the same Kate Orman that wrote several excellent Doctor Who novels, and if you don't know who she is, you really really should go and find out. I'm very fond of Unnatural History.) I've found a few examples of her earlier fanfiction work scattered around, but this one in particular grabbed my attention from the beginning. Maybe it was the title (because honestly? Nothing can top that title), or maybe it's the simple yet emotionally piercing prose. It's only a snapshot of an adventure - clearly, a lot more happened before this story takes place, and there will be a lot that takes place after - but it's all that's needed. I wish I could say more here, but it's such a short story that I'll inevitably end up spoiling something if I do.

(God, I love Kate Orman.)

This one's for the rec bingo (here's the card!) column four, row four prompt 'Frames/framing device/frame-up'

Title:
Gearbox (The Won't Miss a Piece Remix)
Creator: neveralarch
Rating: All Ages
Word Count/Length/Size: 6103
Creator's Summary: "How does the TARDIS work?” asks Ace.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Barbara Wright, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Erimem, Hex Schofield, Ian Chesterton, Jamie McCrimmon, Mel Bush, Romana II, Susan Foreman, The Doctor (1st), The Doctor (2nd), The Doctor (3rd), The Doctor (4th), The Doctor (5th), The Doctor (6th), The Doctor (7th)
Warnings/Notes: None

Reasons for reccing: The TARDIS is a ridiculous, wonderful place to live in, because -  at least according to this fic - it only works according to how its inhabitants think it should work. And I think that's wonderful. This fic is a gorgeous fluffy romp through the inner workings of the TARDIS, with flashback cameos from just about every Classic era Doctor. And of course, it's framed by the storylet of Ace adjusting to life in the TARDIS, and some lovely flashes of insight into her relationship with the Doctor. Plus, the humor in it is wonderful, and so is the characterization - there are some really good lines in there.

Fic rec bingo (card) - today, filling the row one column one prompt 'secrets'.

Title: Annotation
Creator: nostalgia
Rating: All Ages
Word Count/Length/Size: 1042 words
Creator's Summary: "In this place there are rooms that are barely even real."
Characters/Pairings: Rose Tyler, The Doctor (10th), The TARDIS
Warnings/Notes: None

Reasons for reccing: Surreal and just a bit disturbing; in the best possible way. To say anything specific about it would be to ruin it, and every time I reread it I feel like I understand it just a bit more. I think it's making some really clever commentary on continuity - although really, it's hard to tell. There is masterful use of symbolism present in pretty much every sentence and it's just really well written on every conceivable level. The first time I read it, I did so very late at night, and when I woke up the next morning, I wasn't entirely sure if it had actually been real or not. Which I feel like is a testament to the skill of the author. Give it a go.

Today's prompt bingo fill (card) is for the first row, fourth column prompt 'battle/struggle'.

Title:
"Candle flames in windless air"
Creator: deepandlovelydark
Rating: Teen and up audiences
Word Count/Length/Size: ...depends on how long you're willing to spend playing, really. It kept me entertained for hours, personally.
Creator's Summary: So you've spent the last fortnight hitchhiking around rugged bits of the Nevada desert, and while it's been fun and all, you'd rather like your time machine back now.
Text adventure remix of "Heaven Sent", with new twists and turns along the way...
Characters/Pairings: Twelfth Doctor, Clara Oswin Oswald, many others to discover
Warnings/Notes: Major Character Death, any other content warnings that you could potentially apply to 'Heaven Sent'.

Reasons for reccing: Sometimes you just find something so very strikingly unusual and wonderful on the internet, and that thing is a lovingly-crafted, meticulously put together, fully functional text adventure adaptation of one of your favorite Doctor Who stories of all time. And if you're thinking right now that it doesn't sound like a very interesting thing to play because you've watched the episode already and know how it ends, I would very much advise you to think again. It may take you a while to get the hang of the controls, but once you do, you'll be plunged into a rich, hilariously Doctor-ish world in which you play as the Twelfth Doctor, trying to escape from the Confession Dial. And there are many, many ways to do that - not just the solution that was presented in the episode actual.

There are so many things you can do in this game. I can pretty much guarantee that any reasonable command you type into the game will come back with a response of some sort (and some unreasonable commands too!), and every line is delivered in pitch-perfect Twelve voice, with that sarcastic humor that we've all come to know and love. You can play your guitar, attempt to kiss the Veil (key word: attempt), talk to Clara - die again, and again, and again, and again... Reaching the ending and getting that perfect score of 2178308 is very satisfying indeed. I advise you strongly to try it for yourself - you'll be surprised, I think, at how widely you'll be grinning.

Of course (as I mentioned before) there are many other ways to escape the Dial, some of which are unbelievably creative in nature. It is possible to get Iris Wildthyme, among other people, to break you out - although I won't tell you how, exactly. My favorite ending that I've achieved so far is the one involving Compassion, and I won't say any more about that either, apart from mentioning that it involves a rather tricky choice that the Doctor needs to make.

This is how a Doctor Who video game should be - vast, weaving, and deliciously entertaining no matter how many times you play. It obviously took the creator a very long time to put together, so I'm just about begging you at this point to give it a play and then let them know what you thought of it.

Another fill for rec bingo (my card) - this time for the column two, row two prompt 'aliens made us do it'.

Title: Pollination
Creator: Lissy Strata
Rating: All ages
Word Count/Length/Size: 1375 words
Creator's Summary: While touring an alien garden, Peri runs headlong into a cliché.
Characters/Pairings: Peri Brown, Sixth Doctor
Warnings/Notes: None whatsoever.

Reasons for reccing: Who doesn't love a good bit of trope subversion? Saying anything else about the actual content of the fic would spoil it, I think; so let's steer away from that for now, and talk about characterization. (Yes, I know - I'm always on about characterization whenever I rec something, but that's because it's very important to me.) And Lissy Strata has written Six and Peri wonderfully here. Their voices ring out perfectly from the page, and I could almost imagine Colin and Nicola delivering these lines. And if that isn't a reason to read this great little fic, what is?

Plus, the twist is really funny.

Today's rec bingo (card here) is for the third column, fifth row prompt 'injury/illness'. Which brings me to bingo! However, I'm pretty sure I'm gonna keep on reccing and try to get a blackout bingo before the end of the month.

Title:
Numb
Creator: Penny
Rating: All Ages
Word Count/Length/Size: 8651 words
Creator's Summary: Jamie wasn’t afraid of dying – but if there was one thing travelling with the Doctor had taught him, it was that there were worse things. In which Jamie is captured by the Cybermen and partially cyber-converted.
Characters/Pairings: Jamie McCrimmon, The Doctor (2nd), Zoe Herriot
Warnings/Notes: Some disturbing Cyberconversion imagery.

Reasons for reccing: Back when I was several years younger and Calufrax was still a thing, I remember wanting to sign up for ficreccing duties because I had a whole list of stories I wanted to share with everybody. I went back through my old documents this morning while I was trying to find a good story to rec for this bingo prompt in particular, and found that list, and this fic in particular (which I hadn't reread for a long time) was at the top. Which is excellent, because it's a very good fic.

A lot of Doctor Who authors have a particular TARDIS team that they write especially well for and you can tell that they love doing it. The characters' voices will consistently shine through, and the prose will sparkle. In Penny's case, that team is Two and Jamie (with the other two!era companions making frequent appearances). All of their stories are wonderful, really (I especially loved their Steven Universe AU) and I encourage you to go check it all out!

But, anyway. About this fic in particular. One of my many, many weaknesses (I've been revealing my weaknesses gradually via these recs so far, and a talented person would be able to exploit them easily and quickly defeat me in mortal combat without any problems whatsoever) is hurt/comfort, and this is well-written h/c of the very highest quality.
Jamie is someone that’s obviously hard to write (I don't know, I've never tried - I've been too scared of getting him wrong), but oh my stars have they done this well. You can see him trying to do what the Doctor would do, even when he’s in danger. It’s quite light on Zoe, but she’s concerned for Jamie. There’s a gradual reveal in what’s happened, and it’ll have you squirming in anticipation. Plus, a satisfying ending, which is always a good thing.

I've just checked and this fic doesn't have any reviews at all. Which is a terrible, awful crime, and as soon as I post this, I'm off to begin the process of rectifying that. I hope you will join me in doing so, because it really is a wonderful story.

Today's rec bingo (card here!) fills the fifth row, second column prompt 'fix-it'.

Title: How Martha Jones Saved the World and Lucy Saxon Initiated Divorce Proceedings With Extreme Prejudice
Creator: LizBee
Rating: Teen and up
Word Count/Length/Size: 12092 words
Creator's Summary: Entirely AU conclusion to "The Sound of Drums", in which companions come to the rescue, UNIT blows stuff up and Lucy Saxon's pocket-watch is opened.
Characters/Pairings: Martha Jones, Romana II, Tenth Doctor, The Master (Simm), Lucy Saxon, Sarah Jane Smith, Liz Shaw, Jo Grant, Ace McShane, Tegan Jovanka, Jack Harkness, Winifred Bambera
Warnings/Notes: Non-con

Reasons for reccing: LizBee is a wonderful, wonderful author whose work I've loved since I was about 12. Yes, really. (I've been in this fandom for far too long, I think.) Anyway, this particular fic is one that I only discovered pretty recently - in the last year or so - and when I first read it, I couldn't believe that I hadn't done so yet, because... it's really very well done. It's an alternate ending to the Simm!Master-takes-Earth arc (reportedly written in the week between episodes, which is pretty impressive if you ask me) in which a whole host of Classic Who ladies join Martha in her efforts to take the Master down and save the Doctor. And in typical Classic Who lady style, they do it wonderfully. Every single familiar face in this made me smile widely - Sarah Jane, taking charge; Ace, still explosively wonderful as an adult; Liz and Jo (who saw the Master coming from miles away), and every single other one there. I have a weakness for ensemble casts, really, so it's no wonder that I loved this story.

This fic is pitch-perfect when it comes to character voices, and more than that - the dialogue is smart and funny when it needs to be, and I can't help but wish that this is how the episode did go. Please go check it out, especially if you love reading about a whole bunch of beautiful fantastic women being awesome together!

Today's rec bingo (card here!) fills the fifth row, fifth column prompt 'cake'.

Creator: Memory Dragon
Rating: All Ages
Word Count/Length/Size: 4223 words
Creator's Summary: After leaving Tegan again, the Doctor sets off to collect his companions and tries to forget the whole thing ever happened. The TARDIS has a different idea.
Characters/Pairings: Fifth Doctor, Evelyn Smythe, implied Tegan/Five
Warnings/Notes: Spoilers for the BFA "The Gathering."

Reasons for reccing: As soon as I saw this prompt on my rec bingo card, I knew I had to rec an Evelyn story. The question, of course, was, which one should I rec? After all, I have never met an Evelyn fic I did not adore. After a good fifteen minutes of browsing my bookmarks, I remembered this lovely story. It's a wonderful soft moment between a Doctor that does not know Evelyn yet, and Evelyn herself, who (characteristically) is not taking any of his nonsense, no matter which incarnation he's in.

Despite the author's claims to the otherwise, their Five voice is really quite spot-on, as is Evelyn's. It's such a lovely, magical fic, full of chocolate and warmth and hugs and it just makes me really very happy. We all need a friend who's willing to make chocolate cake for us in our lives, don't we? I know I do.

EDIT: hey, I guess this also counts for the monthly theme too! Nice.

Title:
The Splintering
Creator: pqlaertes
Rating: General
Word Count/Length/Size: 3182 words
Creator's Summary: The Doctor and Ace try to avoid the fate the Virgin New Adventures hold for them.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Seventh Doctor, John Constantine, The Stranger, Miss Brown, The Valeyard, Death of the Endless
Warnings/Notes: The author has said that no archive warnings apply, but somebody does get stabbed. This story is also a crossover with several other things, none of which I know entirely well at all, including: Hellblazer, the Sandman comics, and The Stranger, which was pretty much a BBV Doctor Who spinoff. I don't think you need to be familiar with any of these, really.

Reasons for reccing: Sometimes a story just grabs you. There's something about the way it's written, the careful way that the characters are presented and portrayed, the story and wording, and you know that if it's too long you're going to be up past midnight reading onwards; trying to get to the end. This, if you hadn't guessed already, is one of those stories. And thank god it's only about 3k words because, honestly, I could read this author's writing all night.

I first found this fic on an ancient archive of Doctor Who fanfiction that I suspect was created pre-2000. That archive has long since been deleted, and when I couldn't find it again, I was very upset. Thankfully, the author has put all (or most) of their fic onto AO3, which means that one of my favorite fics of all time has been saved!

Disclaimer: I actually do like the VNAs, most of the time. They're good books, and they have fascinating plots and interesting characters, and I think I've actually read all of them at this point. But every time I go back to read them, I can't help but feel a tiny bit chagrined at the direction that they took Ace's character in. I don't think I'd ever be able to write a VNA!Ace fic, not really - she just doesn't feel quite the same. And that's probably why I can easily imagine the events of The Splintering taking place - I can see why the Doctor and Ace (and others) would want to try to avoid the future where they become bitter, cold and distrustful of each other.

So, how to describe this story? It's a surreal, sad and ultimately hopeful story that combines a lot of my favorite tropes to wonderful effect. It's one of those stories that I save for a day when I'm feeling a bit disillusioned with my own writing and I need to be reminded of how brilliant fanfiction can be. The ending always fills my chest with a warm, bright emotion that I can't quite describe. Even if you don't know the crossovers in question (like me. I don't know anything about Hellblazer and I'm only tangentially aware of what The Stranger is) I do advise you to check it out - and give the author some love!

Recs Bingo time!  Here is my card and this is my fifth row, first column fill for the prompt: space
Creator: eve11
Rating: All Ages
Word Count/Length/Size: 2979 words
Creator's Summary: "Rose Tyler, you've faced clockwork droids, Slitheen and Cybermen, not to mention five different types of zombies and a megalomaniacal nightmare better known as the Emperor of the Daleks, and you're telling me you're afraid of some maths?"
Characters/Pairings: Rose Tyler, Tenth Doctor
Warnings/Notes: None

Reasons for reccing: I must admit to having a particular fondness for fics that teach me things. I must also admit to... really not liking math that much; particularly algebra and logarithms (shudder) - I prefer to keep to chemistry, where it's safe! When I first read this fic, I was pleasantly surprised at just how much I ended up enjoying it. It's a beautifully crafted explanation of time, and the dangers of travelling in it; and even better - I found myself understanding it too! The back and forth between the Doctor and Rose is clever and witty and practically bounces along; and their characters practically shine. And I especially loved the vivid location that they find themselves in for most of the fic - I want to visit it, honestly!

Even if you're not the greatest fan of math, please do check this fic out. I just reread it, and thoroughly enjoyed myself all over again. Ironically enough, I'm in the back of my math class right now, avoiding work - hopefully the teacher will forgive me, since I'm technically learning about algebra? (No, probably not. Oh well.)
