Sorry for the long silence, I seem to have drifted away from this fandom a bit. The author was previously known as Sam Storyteller.

Title: Trying To Communicate
Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] Copperbadge
Rating: Teen and Up
Word Count/Length/Size: 1848
Warnings/Notes: None
Summary: There's an alien in the Hub, and it's trying to communicate.
Reasons for reccing: Something I think I recced a long time ago on the LJ version of this community, I've recced it again because the author added another short chapter last year, and because there is now a podfic of the original chapter. A lovely bit of Torchwood fun.

Title: Universes Apart
Creator: atraphoenix on Teaspoon
Rating: All Ages
Word Count 5324
Creator's Summary: They found each other through the skin of the universe.
Characters/Pairings: Gwen Cooper/Rose Tyler, Ianto Jones, Jack Harkness, Owen Harper, Toshiko Sato
Warnings/Notes: None

Reasons for reccing: A bittersweet fic where Rose and Gwen spend the time they have communicating between the main Doctor Who universe and Pete's World.

Title: Twenty Things to Do in Cardiff When You're Dead
Creator: [livejournal.com profile] phineyj
Rating: Mature
Word Count/Length/Size: 6,491 words
Creator's Summary: How Owen spends his time these days.
Characters/Pairings: Owen Harper, Gwen Cooper, Jack Harkness, Ianto Jones, Toshiko Sato (Owen/Gwen, Owen/Diane, and Jack/Ianto mentioned)
Warnings/Notes: explicit talk about suicide, some macabre moments

Reasons for reccing: A great Owen-centric fic, dealing with his dead-but-not state of being and all the annoyances and unknowns it brings with it. He’s never really thought of death as a chronic condition before, but chronic just means you can’t get rid of it, doesn’t it? The story captures his POV very well and I really like the "twenty things" structure, giving us twenty different scenes and several small appearances by other characters.

Title: Clueless, or Butt-Crazy In Love
Creator: [livejournal.com profile] blue_fjords
Rating: PG, whatever that translates to in AO3 terms. I'd put it as Teen because there's some mention of sex-related stuff, though nothing even remotely explicit.
Word Count/Length/Size: about 8,600 words (that's what the writer gives it as, so I don't know more precisely)
Creator's Summary: Jack Harkness is your average American high school boy. 100% AU, be mindful of the crack.
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness, Ianto Jones, Gwen Cooper, Toshiko Sato, Martha Jones, Rhys Williams, Tommy Brockless, Owen Harper, the Tenth Doctor. Jack/Ianto as the main pairing; side-pairings are many.
Notes: AU/fusion with the 1995 film Clueless.

Reasons for reccing: I nearly forgot that I meant to rec more stuff for the AU theme, especially one of my favourite silly AUs of all time: this hilarious fusion of Torchwood with Clueless that somehow works. Jack is Cher. Because of course he is. Gwen is the bestie, naturally, Toshiko is the clueless newcomer, and Ianto the surprisingly attractive ex-stepbrother. It's funny, adorable, and much more feel-good than Torchwood canon, trust me. This is the one American high school AU I totally recommend!

Title: Long Night's Journey Into Day
Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] sahiya
Rating: Explicit
Word Count/Length/Size: 36,514
Creator's Summary: Stranded in Cardiff by his Time Lord twin, the human Doctor must carve out a life for himself at a Torchwood still reeling from losing two of their own.
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness / Ianto Jones / Tenth Doctor (duplicate). Gwen Cooper, Martha Jones.
Warnings/Notes: Explicit m/m (and m/m/m) sex in this one, too.

Reasons for reccing: Another of my favourite Torchwood fics, though this one is a New Who crossover; and another one of my "wait, must get in Torchwood recs before February ends!" Basically, it takes place after Torchwood S2 and Stolen Earth/Journey's End, in canon divergence AU where the Tenth Doctor, instead of dumping the human Doctor into the parallel universe with Rose, lets them stay but sends his human duplicate off to Cardiff with Jack. Jack is still recovering from all the pain inflicted on him by S2 and before, and it falls mostly to Ianto to help the newcomer settle, while also trying to figure out his complicated relationship with Jack. Things ensue.

Sahiya's fics always contain tons of the kind of emotional hurt/comfort that pushes all my buttons, and this one is no exception, and delivers well on both the hurt and the comfort. The story is well written, characterization of all three is wonderful, as well as the supporting cast of Gwen and Martha, and I enjoy the development of all the relationships between the three main characters.

This is the first part of a series, but stands well on its own. A later part of the series also includes Donna Noble, Rose Tyler, and the original, Time Lord edition of the Tenth Doctor, but I do recommend starting with this part!

Title: A Matter of Time
Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] demotu/ [livejournal.com profile] demotu
Rating: Explicit
Word Count/Length/Size: 101,136 words
Creator's Summary: A time travelling, action-adventure, romance-filled science fiction romp ensues when Ianto runs into Jack in the fifty-first century after an accident with a vortex manipulator. Laser blasters, alien dance clubs, mercenaries, a little too much public sex for Ianto's tastes, sneaky plans and circular logic can be found here. Set after Something Borrowed, but not particularly "AU" - it slots into season 2
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness/Ianto Jones, several well-developed OCs and some pairings involving them. There's also an interlude with a threesome that includes a character/self combination, but it's not essential to the plot, so if that kind of thing puts you off, you can just skip that one.
Warnings/Notes: Explicit, mainly m/m sex happens here and there. Come to think of it, most of my favourite Torchwood fics have explicit sex. I think that's just the way Jack/Ianto stories tend to roll.

Reasons for reccing: Just managing to get in some Torchwood recs before February ends with its spin-offs theme! This was a much-recced and much-loved fic in the heyday of the Torchwood fandom, but as the fandom isn't so active anymore, perhaps it could use a boost to let newer fans know about it. It's one of my favourite Torchwood fics ever, and probably the only one I quite often think back on. The creator's summary says all the main things about it; I'll just add that it has excellent characterization of both Ianto and Jack, and in Jack's case offers fascinating views into Jack at different times of his life. The adventures are exciting, it's one of my favourite time travel stories, and the developments of Jack and Ianto's relationship are lovely and well explored. In addition, the OCs are well-developed and could just as well star in a non-fannish science fiction novel. Also, it has my favourite Jack-before-he-was-Jack name - it actually works and sounds like a real name and suits him.

Title: Five Companions Who Weren't and What Could Have Been
Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] Hinn_Raven
Rating: General Audiences
Word Count/Length/Size: 2922 words
Creator's Summary: Five people who almost traveled with the Doctor, and what they could have changed.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor, Toshiko Sato, Rose Tyler, Jack Harkness, Martha Jones, Sally Sparrow, Astrid Peth, Donna Noble, Larry Nightingale, Rita Afzal, Amelia Pond, Rory Williams, Wilfred Mott, River Song
Warnings/Notes: None

Reasons for reccing: I read this ages ago, and I'm pretty sure that this is the story that gave me the idea for my seasonal challenge attempt for Companions Who Never Were. Also it's a very good story...

Title: Jack Harkness - Super Temp
Creator: madder_rose (Teaspoon) // [livejournal.com profile] madder_rose
Rating: Adult/Explicit
Word Count/Length/Size: 38,609 words (for the first fic of the series)
Creator's Summary: Jack Harkness lives in a cubicled office. Then one day, he meets a blue eyed man, and things slowly start to change.
Characters/Pairings: Characters: Jack Harkness, Ianto Jones, Gwen Cooper, Mickey Smith, Martha Jones, Sarah Jane Smith, original characters. Pairings: Jack Harkness/Ianto Jones, Jack Harkness/OMC
Warnings/Notes: Well, this one has warnings in spades. There's domestic abuse, explicit violence, sexual abuse and non-con (not between Jack and Ianto), character death, implied torture. Also explicit sex and swearing. Do take the warnings seriously if you have issues with any of those. I'm squeamish and sensitive and only rarely read stories involving explicit violence or non-con, but I was okay with this story, however, it doesn't mean it won't be too much for others.
Spoilers for Torchwood S2 and Doctor Who S4 finale.

Reasons for reccing: For the bingo square "It's not what it seems". This fic immediately popped into my mind the moment I saw this square on my bingo card, so I don't know why I took so long to make this post. It's one of my favourite long Torchwood fics, and "it's not what it seems" definitely fits this story. I avoided it for long, despite seeing it on many Torchwood recs lists, because it sounded like a very OOC AU - but trust me, it's actually awesome and clever. You start to see it after a while, so if you're not immediately convinced, give it a few chapters.

I don't want to say too much about the story because I don't want to spoil anything, but it might be for you if you if you like:
- long Torchwood fics
- emotional hurt/comfort and angst
- hot sex scenes (Jack/Ianto)
- stories that back a strong emotional punch
- Jack who's vulnerable and victimized for reasons
- Ianto being kick-ass and awesome; think the S2 episode "Meat"

I happen to like all those things, so I've read this one and it's first sequel, Tonight (7570 words), many times. One of the things I really love about them is that characters face some actual psychological and emotional consequences as a result of bad things happening to them; it's one of the many things Torchwood the TV series rarely got right, though I love it in all its flawedness.

There's also a full-length sequel called "Jack Harkness - Lives Again," but if you don't feel like committing to over 60,000 words, you don't need to read it (it was good, but not quite as good as Super Temp). However, I strongly recommend reading the first "Tonight" if you read the first story, because it deals with some unresolved emotional issues in the end of the first story. And it's only a few chapters, so if you've already read over 38,000 words, it's not too much.

Title: Paradise Naan
Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] ajhall
Rating: Teen
Word Count/Length/Size: 3945
Creator's Summary: no summary
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness, Sybil Ramkin, Ianto Jones, Owen Harper, Death (Discworld), Myfanwy (Torchwood Pterodactyl), Gwen Cooper, DCI Swanson, Toshiko Sato
Warnings/Notes: none

Reasons for reccing: One of several brilliant crossovers by A.J. Hall - in this Discworld crossover Jack Harkness goes looking for some help when Myfanwy is ill and comes back with more than he bargained for.
