Title: Undercurrents
Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] thisiszircon
Rating: Teen and Up
Word Count/Length/Size: 8k words
Creator's Summary: Ace is no stranger to betrayal.
Characters/Pairings: Seventh Doctor, Ace McShane
Warnings/Notes: n/a

Reasons for reccing: For 1989, since The Curse of Fenric first aired that year. Ever wanted to know what was going on in Ace's head during that moment? Ever wanted an extension of the ending of the story plus a coda to Survival? Behold! For this story delivers!

Rating: General
Word Count/Length/Size: 629 words
Creator's Summary: Barbara vs. Pigeon.
Characters/Pairings: Barbara Wright/Ian Chesterton
Warnings/Notes:

Reasons for reccing: Pigeon! It's just fun, and who doesn't love that pun? And pigeons?

Title: All Your Beliefs
Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] Doyle / [livejournal.com profile] doyle_sb4
Rating: General
Word Count/Length/Size: 2k words
Creator's Summary: The key became part of the story, of course. The Doctor leaves more than just Susan behind.
Characters/Pairings: Susan Foreman, Barbara Wright/Ian Chesterton
Warnings/Notes: Major character death

Reasons for reccing: An interesting diversion from canon (starting notice an interesting pattern here). It's beautifuly written.

Title: The Wright Stuff
Creator: Tim Pieraccini (he has a Twitter account, [twitter.com profile] tjpieraccini)
Rating: none given, I would say Teen and Up
Word Count/Length/Size: around 134k words
Creator's Summary: This began life as a Doctor Who idea. That’s not how it ended up. There is some Doctor Who content, but those looking for much evidence of the Doctor himself will be disappointed. Those interested in a slightly different take on the early years of Who and a view of the universe that is considerably older than the 745 years the Hartnell Doctor was supposed to carry might find the book interesting. (If nothing else, you could test your knowledge of sixties culture on the chapter headings; they’re all song titles or lyrics or film titles from ’67 or before. There is a note at the end to identify them for anyone who cares, but I’d advise against reading it beforehand if you wish to avoid a fairly major spoiler towards the end.)

Oh, and about the title. I know. It was a working title, and it kind of stuck. Be grateful; I did consider calling it "Barbara Cutaway".
Characters/Pairings: Barbara Wright, original characters, Ian Chesterton (cameo)
Warnings/Notes: character death, mentions of adult situations and minor sexuality, and 1960s-isms.

Reasons for reccing: It's dense, very interesting, and long. Your main (original) character is a bit of a prick who wants to be an author, and slowly gets to know a mysterious older woman who may or may not have met aliens (and is very esoteric). Guess who that woman is. Don't think I've ever read anything like it.
Also it took me years to find it in full.

Title: Inanimate Love
Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] goldenrod (under the pseudonym Palgrave)
Rating: General
Word Count/Length/Size: 254 words
Creator's Summary: The doomed, tragic one-way romance between a hatstand and a Time Lord.
Characters/Pairings: Fifth Doctor/his hatstand
Warnings/Notes: n/a

Reasons for reccing: It's just so funny, and the fact that it's written seriously makes it even better (ie. crack treated seriously).

Title: Monsters
Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] Whispersecho
Rating: Teen and Up
Word Count/Length/Size: 100 words
Creator's Summary: There are all kinds of monsters.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane (and Manisha Purkayastha)
Warnings/Notes: character death

Reasons for reccing: Something I don't see often is the exploration of Ace and Manisha's friendship. This piece, one of those rare explorations, contrasts childhood make-believe with the real monsters of the real world. And yes, it's yet another fic by whispersecho.

For the Surprises square on my Reccer's Bingo card... bingo...
Title: Ordinary World
Creator: whispersecho
Rating: All Ages
Word Count/Length/Size: 498 words
Creator's Summary: Ian and Barbara return home to find they are two years out from their own time. They have an awful lot of explaining to do, or *someone* does. Mostly First Doctor era, but other characters appear in Chapter 5.
Characters/Pairings: Barbara Wright, Ian Chesterton (and some surprise characters)
Warnings/Notes: n/a

Reasons for reccing: One of my favourite seventh Doctor and Ace writers wrote for my OTP as well. How could I resist? It's another take on "Barbara and Ian are back" fic, but with a bit more Dr Who-ness. You'll see when you read it.

Rating: All Ages
Word Count/Length/Size: 3k words
Creator's Summary: "Time is nature's way of keeping everything from happening at once."
Characters/Pairings: First Doctor, Susan Foreman, Barbara Wright/Ian Chesterton
Warnings/Notes:

Reasons for reccing: An unusual, yet very first Doctor adventure. Both the technobabble and the characterisation is great.

Title: Verity
Creator: whispersecho
Rating: All Ages
Word Count/Length/Size: 8k words
Creator's Summary: John Smith wrote stories of impossible things. He never showed them to anyone for fear they would think him foolish and childish or mad. Then, one day, his impossible stories began happening. Inspired by and shamelessly filking bits from Paul Cornell's NA Human Nature.
Characters/Pairings: Seventh Doctor/Ace McShane, Bernice Summerfield
Warnings/Notes: mentor/student pairing

Reasons for reccing: Despite my strong opinions regarding the New Adventures range, Human Nature is one of my favourite Doctor Who. It's just missing one little thing, and that is Ace, who left a few books ago. It's a nice, somewhat short retelling. And yes, that's a Verity Lambert reference!

Title: Thermodynamic Stability
Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] Ladymercury_10
Rating: General
Word Count/Length/Size: 516 words
Creator's Summary: The stray is in one of the laboratories, mixing things that oughtn’t to be mixed.
Characters/Pairings: The TARDIS, Ace McShane, seventh Doctor
Warnings/Notes: n/a

Reasons for reccing: TARDIS POV! Which is something outside the box (or, rather, inside the box... hope you liked my joke). It's lovely, and so is the small interaction between the Doctor and Ace.

Creator's Summary: Written for Tic Tac Woe, the Apocabingo Challenge of wilful mass destruction. Prompt: Evolution/Absorbed Into New Species.
Characters/Pairings: First Doctor, Susan Foreman, Barbara Wright, Ian Chesterton
Warnings/Notes: attempted cannibalism

Reasons for reccing: It's an interesting look at the Earth's far future, with some nice dialogue. Kudos for morbid!Barbara, that's something fans don't quite catch on while watching her serials.

For the Aliens Made Us Do It square on my Reccer's Bingo.
Title: Things Unsaid
Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] TigerKat
Rating: General
Word Count/Length/Size: 2k words
Creator's Summary: Ian and Barbara deal with an accident. Which perhaps wasn't terribly accidental.
Characters/Pairings: First Doctor, Susan Foreman, Barbara Wright/Ian Chesterton
Warnings/Notes: n/a

Reasons for reccing: It's "Aliens Made Us Do It"! But it's not the "it" you were expecting. I love trope subversion and characters talking feelings to one another, and this one is *chef's kiss*. Also the ending is very funny.

Link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/4426013

Note: As I'm preparing these in advance, it occurred to me I should be checking for repeats. And, turns out, this one was already recced. My apologies. It shan't happen again.

Title: Embrace
Creator: [fanfiction.net profile] Yumemisama
Rating: K+ (would say Teen would be more appropriate)
Word Count/Length/Size: 4k words
Creator's Summary: Seventh Doctor and Ace. Just a short, blurred recounting of an adventure. I really haven't the faintest clue how to rate these things, so I'll slap a PG on it and hope that forestalls any complaints...
Characters/Pairings: Seventh Doctor/Ace
Warnings/Notes: ...it's seventh Doctor/Ace. Also I think ff.net messed up the formatting on a couple of words.

Reasons for reccing: Let's go back to "pretty oblique" stories. Except it's even more bizarre and hard to follow than my first bingo rec. However, it is very atmospheric, and the prose is wonderful. It's one of those stories that takes you for a ride basically. (Again, it's related to the prompt I swear.)

Title: Historical Wrack (The Help and Comfort Remix)
Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] JohnAmendAll
Rating: General
Word Count/Length/Size: 2k words
Creator's Summary: "Right," Ace said, her thought briefly resting on the can of Nitro-Nine she'd concealed in her petticoat just in case of emergencies. "Is this why we're telling everyone I'm your wife?"
Characters/Pairings: Seventh Doctor, Ace
Warnings/Notes: Remix of thisbluespirit's Historical Romp.

Reasons for reccing: An extension of thisbluespirit's fic (which is also excellent) that is a lot of fun! And then it hits you. The characterisation is so on point.

Title: Stop Telling Me You're Dead
Creator: Richard Goff aka Quark
Rating: All Ages
Word Count/Length/Size: 2k words
Creator's Summary: A pretty oblique Who story, about what happened to a certain history teacher thirty years after she stumbled, with a colleague, into a junkyard at 76 Totters' Lane.
Characters/Pairings: Barbara Wright/Ian Chesterton, original characters
Warnings/Notes: Major character death

Reasons for reccing: Pretty oblique indeed. Ian is dead, and Barbara keeps getting mysterious phone calls. Quite a mysterious and gloomy read, haven't found anything quite like it yet. And I swear it makes sense with the prompt (even if I had to scour my bookmarks to find something that was semi-related to it).

Title: Lost in Translation
Creator: Lissy Strata
Rating: All Ages
Word Count/Length/Size: 22k words (8 chapters)
Creator's Summary: The TARDIS's translation circuit is sabotaged by small, furry aliens. Then it all goes downhill from there.
Characters/Pairings: First Doctor, Susan Foreman, Barbara Wright, Ian Chesterton
Warnings/Notes: n/a

Reasons for reccing: Interesting use of the (lack of) translation device in the TARDIS, plus an interesting setting and a bit of timey-wimey shenanigans. It's also very funny.

Title: untitled (a scene from Farewell Great Macedon)
Creator: [tumblr.com profile] arrozbrillante
Rating: General
Word Count/Length/Size: several panels
Creator's Summary: i shall never loom another child again
Characters/Pairings: First Doctor, Susan Foreman, Barbara Wright, Ian Chesterton (minor Barbara/Ian)
Warnings/Notes: Mentions of death. It appears the original post was deleted, but the piece was saved through reblogs. So, the link posted will be from one of said reblogs.

Reasons for reccing: Farewell Great Maceson is great, and arrozbrillante's interpretation of this scene is fantastic. It's cartoony and animated and also never fails to make me smile. Love Susan's "Puss in Boots-esque face. This team has come such a long way.
(Also Ian's little blush. Thought it was a nice little touch.)

Characters/Pairings: First Doctor, Susan Foreman, Barbara Wright, Ian Chesterton
Warnings/Notes: plant-touching this piece was done when Ceruleans were a meme on Tumblr.

Reasons for reccing: It's so well made, the facial expressions are great and never fails to me smile.

Creator's Summary: They had been best friends when they had adventured together in Cathay, but now Susan and Ping Cho were older and they often wondered what became of the other.
Characters/Pairings: Susan Foreman, Ping Cho
Warnings/Notes: n/a

Reasons for reccing: The relationship between Susan and Ping Cho is great, and this is a bit of a different take. They're both older and wondering what became of each other, and it's a nice character piece.

Warnings/Notes: none

Reasons for reccing: Short but sweet. A nice view of what happened after Susan left, how she adapts to her new life.
