Title: The Worst Doctor Who Story Ever
Creator:  Astrid
Rating: All Ages
Word Count/Length/Size:  608
Creator's Summary: For April Fools Day, I present something I wrote last year as a parody of all the bad Doctor Who fics (well, bad fics in general). I'm very sorry about this, I really am.

Characters/Pairings:  Ace McShane, Adric, Leela, Mel Bush, Peri Brown, Romana II, The Doctor (8th), The Doctor (Other), The Master (Other), The Rani, The Silurians, The Valeyard, The Yeti
Warnings/Notes: None.

Reasons for reccing: Yes, that's the actual title.   It's a parody of bad fic:  the funniest and most accurate parody I think I've ever read.   I honestly don't know how much I can say here without spoiling it.  But we all have come across fic like this at some point.

Creator: AceOnGallifrey
Rating: All Ages
Word Count/Length/Size: 1827
Creator's Summary: The Tenth Doctor discovers that his song isn't ending: it's just leaving to join in a greater melody, above and beyond death itself. Oneshot of various pairings and much joy.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Donna Noble, Grace Holloway, Jamie McCrimmon, Jo Grant, Peri Brown, River Song, Romana II, Rose Tyler, Susan Foreman, The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (11th), The Doctor (1st), The Doctor (2nd), The Doctor (3rd), The Doctor (4th), The Doctor (5th), The Doct
Warnings/Notes: None (though this is a sort-of Crossover with Young Wizards by Diane Duane)

Reasons for reccing: I recently remembered this fic, and reread it.  And it is one of the most stunning, beautiful things.  Everything is very vivid and detailed and a nice ending for Ten. With a bunch of little cameos.

Word Count/Length/Size: 2134 words
Creator's Summary: Getting tied up was an occupational hazard, but this was knot how Romana expected her day to go...
Characters/Pairings: Fourth Doctor/Romana II, followed by Eighth Doctor/Romana II
Warnings/Notes: none

Reasons for reccing: For the "Accidental Marriage" square in my Reccers' Bingo. It's a cute and pretty fluffy story where some guards tie up the Doctor and Romana (as usual) but accidentally use a ceremonial knot used in Gallifreyan weddings. They decide it doesn't have to count... but then, on the other hand, it could... Lots of very in-character banter and fun Gallifreyan worldbuilding.

Title: Renewal
Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] CeruleanTactician
Rating: General Audiences
Word Count/Length/Size: 3657 words
Creator's Summary:

The Doctor and Charley accidentally get married after a misunderstanding on an alien planet.

It doesn’t have to mean anything. Not unless they want it to.

Characters/Pairings: Eighth Doctor/Charley Pollard
Warnings/Notes: none

Reasons for reccing: Also for the "Accidental Marriage" square. Eight and Charley were made for this trope, with their spectacularly ambiguous will-they-won't-they-are-they-aren't-they relationship, and this fic hits all the right notes, with the Doctor hilariously blasé about their accidental marriage and Charley unsure what to make of any of it. The alien planet is beautifully described, too. And the epilogue is adorable!

Reasons for reccing: If Seven and Ace meet a trope, the trope is likely to end up in flaming bits all over the place... A cute and hilarious platonic subversion of the accidental marriage trope. I especially appreciated the punchline.

Creator's Summary: Romana, Leela and Narvin step through the portal into an alternate Gallifrey. Things start to go downhill from there.
Characters/Pairings: Romana II, Leela, Narvin
Warnings/Notes: canon-typical violence, torture & suffering

Reasons for reccing: It's a great day when you wake up to find someone has out of the blue posted a brand-new 10k+ story in your favorite small fandom. This is the author's first fic in the fandom, apparently, and what a debut! It's a story set during Gallifrey series 4, largely building on the aftermath of the spoilery thing that happens to Narvin in Reborn, but it does a fantastic job exploring the character of each member of the trio and strengthening the relationships between them. (Honestly, from the beginning of it I expected it to be mainly Narvin Must Suffer, and while he does indeed suffer I was blown away at how well-balanced among the three of them the fic felt.) The worldbuilding of the alternate Gallifrey is also fascinating, and plays on the symbolism and themes introduced in the show in some really interesting ways.

I'm also going to try to make it fit the TV Tropes Challenge theme "Decoy Getaway," in that there are both lookalikes and getaways, although the lookalikes do make the getaway harder, unfortunately for our heroes.

Word Count/Length/Size: 1926 words
Creator's Summary: Going to dinner with someone outside of the proper sequence of events is not a risk to be repeated.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor/Romana I, Tenth Doctor/Romana II, background Fourth Doctor/Romana
Warnings/Notes: none

Reasons for reccing: This is the sort of bizarre, topsy-turvy, slightly messed-up, very sad romance that only time travel can give you. A post-Time-War Tenth Doctor meets Romana--the one still travelling with his former self. Is it cheating to go out with a future version of your partner behind the current version's back? Regardless of whether you think it is or isn't (the characters aren't sure, either), there's still only one way this can end, and it's sad and beautiful.

One of the things I love about science fiction is how it can make our metaphors literal. Who hasn't thought, in the midst of grief, "If only I could go back, if only I could see them one more time, have one more day with them, say the thing I never said?" This fic explores those longings in a really moving way.

And my favorite aliens kiss each other.

Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] LizBee
Rating: G
Word Count/Length/Size: 7407 words
Creator's Summary: The secret alien lovechild of the Doctor and Romana learns some hard facts about life. A domestic epic in two four and a half parts.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor/Romana II, past Fourth Doctor/Romana II, OFC, secondarily Rose Tyler and Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings/Notes: none

Reasons for reccing: Crack? Kidfic?? Teenage OC who finds out the Doctor is her secret dad??? Say it ain't so. But this fic is the reverse of cliche--instead it's hilarious, heartwarming, and perfectly in character. I actually love Livia, the sulky fourteen-year-old raised in E-Space who serves as an outsider POV on the Doctor and Romana's post-Time-War reunion, who's unfortunately inherited her father's ridiculous hair along with his tendency to be... difficult. I mean, she really is what their kid would be like. LizBee does a great job with the outsider POV, letting us see far more about Romana and the Doctor than Livia yet understands.

Funny as this story is--and this is certainly a comedy--it's also a really intriguing concept to me for more than just crack-value, mainly, I think, because of how it puts a variety of different strains on their relationship: both sci-fi issues (you destroyed our planet!) and very grounded issues (how are we going to raise our daughter?). Seeing how they overcome these issues and get to know each other all over again is really sweet and beautiful (and hilarious).

Additionally, while Sarah Jane and Rose are friends, not love interests, to the Doctor, it is written with a lot of affection and respect for their characters.

The story itself is about 15 years old at this point, so details of the Time War might have been jossed, but they'll probably be re-jossed differently by the next arc, so who cares?

Definitely read this story, unless you're really committed to looms.

Rating: Teen
Word Count/Length/Size: 1094 words
Creator's Summary: Romana runs herself into the ground. The Doctor is less than impressed.
Characters/Pairings: Seventh Doctor/Romana II
Warnings/Notes: portrayal of PTSD

Reasons for reccing: I've personally written over half the Seven/Romana tag, having fallen hard for this particular combination, but I'm not the only one! This follows up on the Big Finish audio The Apocalypse Element, but detailed knowledge of that audio isn't required for the fic--just the context that Romana was a Dalek prisoner on Etra Prime for twenty years, she was rescued by the Doctor, they never had a proper talk, and now she's the Lord President.

This is a fix-it for the lack of closure between them in TAE, an exploration of Romana's motivations and issues with Gallifrey, and a showcase of all the ways in which the Doctor and Romana are actually kind of incompatible--and why they're still somehow perfect for each other. The Seventh Doctor and Romana II feel so well-matched to me, true equals, the President of Gallifrey and Time's Champion, who have been through so much separately and together.

This fic is wonderfully angsty but the ending is soft and lovely, especially if you, like Romana, need a hug.

Word Count/Length/Size: 860 words
Creator's Summary: She built four different kinds of vortex manipulator, then took the circuits apart and turned it all into a device for producing perfectly browned toast — which, if she thought about it, really seemed like something the Doctor might do.
Characters/Pairings: Fourth Doctor/Romana II
Warnings/Notes: none

Reasons for reccing: I love TARDIS domesticity, and this fic combines that with emotional seriousness: the author has a great insight into what makes both characters tick. (Which takes place as Romana is trying to work out what, in fact, does make her tick in her new body.) I always say that what I like about this pairing is how they think very differently and yet are so much on each other's wavelength; they're complementary. This is really a case study in that complementarity.

And on the less intellectual side of shipping, they are so goshdarned cute.

Warnings/Notes: None

Reasons for reccing: Because it's funny. It has a trending theme, which leads to the reveal of how the First Doctor ended up with that ulster. Reasons for reccing: It's clever how all the Doctors are in here, causing chaos as only they can. And amusing, with everyone's reactions to the Doctors. And the OCs - Ian and Barbara's family - are believable and interesting with their opinions on their two year disappearance and marriage.

Warnings/Notes: As it says, a vampire AU - mind the tags.

Reasons for reccing: This is a wonderfully dark, creepy and funny fic that meets both of this month's themes in one excellent work. I love the energy and humour of it (particularly Singe's capturing of Sarah's voice), as well as the sinister weirdness of the concept. Characters/Pairings: most female companions from both the Classic and New series of Doctor Who

Reasons for reccing: This is a whole fan art series too lovely to choose just one or two in it, so I'm going to post links to several of my favourites under the cut (since you could do that when you're fulfilling a challenge!) and from them, you can click on your favourites and, if you want, you can easily access the gallery to see even more of them. These are quite exquisite drawings of most of the female companions in Doctor Who, pictured with larger-than-life flowers chosen to match their personality, appearance, colours etc. While combining female characters with flowers may sound very traditional, the characters possess all the vividness, strength and energy they have in the series - the flowers seem to represent vitality and growth rather than any excessive fragility or some such. Many of the pictures are my favourite fan arts ever of those characters.

Creator's Summary: Jenny saves some civilisations, does a lot of running and meets some of the Doctor's old friends.
Characters/Pairings: Jenny (The Doctor's Daughter), Mel Bush, Sarah Jane Smith, Romana II, Tegan Jovanka, Mickey Smith.

Reasons for reccing: I love the character of Jenny even if The Doctor's Daughter has its flaws as an episode, and I love cross-era stories where different companions and guest stars meet one another, and this was a lovely example of both. The story has a great, cheerful, fresh Jenny voice, and the various companions she meets are their delightful selves. I also love their reactions to her background, and extra points for Romana II teaching her how to Time-Lord in a more thought-out fashion.

Warnings/Notes: None

Reasons for reccing: The TARDIS is a ridiculous, wonderful place to live in, because -  at least according to this fic - it only works according to how its inhabitants think it should work. And I think that's wonderful. This fic is a gorgeous fluffy romp through the inner workings of the TARDIS, with flashback cameos from just about every Classic era Doctor. And of course, it's framed by the storylet of Ace adjusting to life in the TARDIS, and some lovely flashes of insight into her relationship with the Doctor. Plus, the humor in it is wonderful, and so is the characterization - there are some really good lines in there.

Title: How Martha Jones Saved the World and Lucy Saxon Initiated Divorce Proceedings With Extreme Prejudice

Rating: Teen and up
Word Count/Length/Size: 12092 words
Creator's Summary: Entirely AU conclusion to "The Sound of Drums", in which companions come to the rescue, UNIT blows stuff up and Lucy Saxon's pocket-watch is opened.
Characters/Pairings: Martha Jones, Romana II, Tenth Doctor, The Master (Simm), Lucy Saxon, Sarah Jane Smith, Liz Shaw, Jo Grant, Ace McShane, Tegan Jovanka, Jack Harkness, Winifred Bambera
Warnings/Notes: Non-con

Reasons for reccing: LizBee is a wonderful, wonderful author whose work I've loved since I was about 12. Yes, really. (I've been in this fandom for far too long, I think.) Anyway, this particular fic is one that I only discovered pretty recently - in the last year or so - and when I first read it, I couldn't believe that I hadn't done so yet, because... it's really very well done. It's an alternate ending to the Simm!Master-takes-Earth arc (reportedly written in the week between episodes, which is pretty impressive if you ask me) in which a whole host of Classic Who ladies join Martha in her efforts to take the Master down and save the Doctor. And in typical Classic Who lady style, they do it wonderfully. Every single familiar face in this made me smile widely - Sarah Jane, taking charge; Ace, still explosively wonderful as an adult; Liz and Jo (who saw the Master coming from miles away), and every single other one there. I have a weakness for ensemble casts, really, so it's no wonder that I loved this story.

This fic is pitch-perfect when it comes to character voices, and more than that - the dialogue is smart and funny when it needs to be, and I can't help but wish that this is how the episode did go. Please go check it out, especially if you love reading about a whole bunch of beautiful fantastic women being awesome together!

Characters/Pairings: Sixth Doctor/Charley Pollard
Warnings: None

Reasons for reccing: I can't not re-rec this story for this prompt. We don't often see Six just having fun and finding joy & silliness in the universe. Nor any much hint of vulnerability. But this is definitely what it would look like, and Charley Pollard is the companion who would draw it out in all its romantic character. This starts out just as a silly scene, but in the end it takes some vino (okay, absinthe) for Charley to find her veritas--that he's still the man she fell in love with. It's on point in character, dialogue, situation and tone. Funny and poignant and shows a side of Six we always know is there deep down. Just a beautiful story.

Characters/Pairings: Various characters from the Big Finish Gallifrey chronicles
Warnings: none

Reasons for reccing: This is a really delightful story even if you have not listened to the Gallifrey audios. The Publisher's summary describes the Gallifrey chronicles as "Tales of intrigue and political manoeuvring from the seat of Time Lord power. Join Romana, Leela and K9 as they find enemies on all sides in a delicate game with the fate of Gallifrey hanging in the balance." Well in this story they trade that intrigue and manouevring for . . . a wee bit of drive-by babysitting. I think they definitely would prefer the politics!
