Title: The Worst Doctor Who Story Ever
Creator:  Astrid
Rating: All Ages
Word Count/Length/Size:  608
Creator's Summary: For April Fools Day, I present something I wrote last year as a parody of all the bad Doctor Who fics (well, bad fics in general). I'm very sorry about this, I really am.

Characters/Pairings:  Ace McShane, Adric, Leela, Mel Bush, Peri Brown, Romana II, The Doctor (8th), The Doctor (Other), The Master (Other), The Rani, The Silurians, The Valeyard, The Yeti
Warnings/Notes: None.

Reasons for reccing: Yes, that's the actual title.   It's a parody of bad fic:  the funniest and most accurate parody I think I've ever read.   I honestly don't know how much I can say here without spoiling it.  But we all have come across fic like this at some point.

Title: Animus Revertendi
Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] QuokkaMocha
Rating: T
Word Count/Length/Size: 50k words
Creator's Summary: The Valeyard has come to Rohelian 4 to secure himself a new body, having lost his last one on Gallifrey. His plan was to land, collect his order, then skip off without paying but instead, he's caught up in a siege as the Rohelian Genetic Engineering Facility is held hostage by an alien war fleet.
Characters/Pairings: The Valeyard, OFC (pre-ship, but it's very slow burn across multiple stories, and this story is essentially gen)
Warnings/Notes: canon-typical violence, non-sexual slavery. This story follows on from QuokkaMocha's previous story Trial and Error, which establishes their version of the Valeyard's backstory but doesn't introduce the OC, and is part of the ongoing series Doctor Who: Darker Side. However, Animus Revertendi is perfectly readable alone.

Reasons for reccing: For the bingo space "Original Characters."

This fic features a post-Trial Valeyard who's trying to carve out his own identity: he's definitely not the Doctor, but he doesn't want to be just the Doctor's shadow either. Meanwhile, Solitaire was genetically engineered to be the perfect nanny, but was returned to store for flaws like "talking back" and "thinking for herself" and now works customer service for the company that produced her. The Valeyard initially wants nothing to do with her, but she sees him as a glimpse of a bigger life than she'll ever have. But then, of course, events throw them together...

QuokkaMocha's character writing is incredible. Solitaire is so alive, complicated and realistic. I love how she's sharp, clever, and emotionally intelligent, but limited by her limited experience of life. She and the Valeyard are on wonderfully parallel journeys, both trying to find an identity and a way of life outside the oppressive systems that created them, so although they have very different personalities they work incredibly well together. I particularly like that she doesn't start out with any very clear idea of what she wants to escape to, or even specific plans to run away--she just has this sense that there could be more to life, and then she responds with courage and curiosity as things kick off. I also like the Valeyard's slow exploration of the idea that there are ways to exist outside the framework of being either "the Doctor" or "the opposite of the Doctor." He starts out trying to be very self-sufficient, very much an island--snarky, prickly, pessimistic, and often unpleasant--but he slowly admits that while he never meant to take a companion, maybe he can have a friend...

Solitaire is perfect companion material and I love her. And if she gets the Valeyard instead of the Doctor--well, he needs her, and she wouldn't trade him!

Honestly, if I had to pick only one fic ever to reread, it genuinely might be this one. It would be a hard choice, but it might be this one.

(My alternative rec for "Original Characters" would be Cheer Up, Emo Time Moppet by LizBee, but I recommended that fairly recently on a spree of Romana recs, so I won't repeat myself. Same goes for The Light of Neustern by GrafEdelweiss, come to think of it.)

(Note on tagging: I hope it's OK to use both the type: gen and type: het tags. The fic is tagged on AO3 in the gen category but also has the Valeyard/OFC relationship tag.)

EDIT: hey, I guess this also counts for the monthly theme too! Nice.

Title:
The Splintering
Creator: pqlaertes
Rating: General
Word Count/Length/Size: 3182 words
Creator's Summary: The Doctor and Ace try to avoid the fate the Virgin New Adventures hold for them.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Seventh Doctor, John Constantine, The Stranger, Miss Brown, The Valeyard, Death of the Endless
Warnings/Notes: The author has said that no archive warnings apply, but somebody does get stabbed. This story is also a crossover with several other things, none of which I know entirely well at all, including: Hellblazer, the Sandman comics, and The Stranger, which was pretty much a BBV Doctor Who spinoff. I don't think you need to be familiar with any of these, really.

Reasons for reccing: Sometimes a story just grabs you. There's something about the way it's written, the careful way that the characters are presented and portrayed, the story and wording, and you know that if it's too long you're going to be up past midnight reading onwards; trying to get to the end. This, if you hadn't guessed already, is one of those stories. And thank god it's only about 3k words because, honestly, I could read this author's writing all night.

I first found this fic on an ancient archive of Doctor Who fanfiction that I suspect was created pre-2000. That archive has long since been deleted, and when I couldn't find it again, I was very upset. Thankfully, the author has put all (or most) of their fic onto AO3, which means that one of my favorite fics of all time has been saved!

Disclaimer: I actually do like the VNAs, most of the time. They're good books, and they have fascinating plots and interesting characters, and I think I've actually read all of them at this point. But every time I go back to read them, I can't help but feel a tiny bit chagrined at the direction that they took Ace's character in. I don't think I'd ever be able to write a VNA!Ace fic, not really - she just doesn't feel quite the same. And that's probably why I can easily imagine the events of The Splintering taking place - I can see why the Doctor and Ace (and others) would want to try to avoid the future where they become bitter, cold and distrustful of each other.

So, how to describe this story? It's a surreal, sad and ultimately hopeful story that combines a lot of my favorite tropes to wonderful effect. It's one of those stories that I save for a day when I'm feeling a bit disillusioned with my own writing and I need to be reminded of how brilliant fanfiction can be. The ending always fills my chest with a warm, bright emotion that I can't quite describe. Even if you don't know the crossovers in question (like me. I don't know anything about Hellblazer and I'm only tangentially aware of what The Stranger is) I do advise you to check it out - and give the author some love!
