Title: The Keeper of Darkness
Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] heimeldat
Rating: Teen and Up Audiences
Word Count/Length/Size: 27k words
Creator's Summary: An enslaved town built in perpetual darkness. A clever scheme that (as usual) the Doctor hasn't bothered explaining to Ace. And a vampire queen who wants the Doctor to join her clan. What could go wrong?
Characters/Pairings: Seventh Doctor, Ace McShane, briefly Narvin, OCs
Warnings/Notes: Graphic Depictions of Violence; vampirism and associated unpleasantness; hypnotism/mind control

Reasons for reccing:
(It’s me! I’m still here!)

This has been a favorite WIP of mine and (evidently put in the mood by the Goth Opera audio) the author has just wrapped it up, so I ran directly over here to rec it. As per Heimeldat’s tags, “I don’t think I’m capable of writing Seven and Ace without making both of their lives miserable.” They certainly have a rough time—the Doctor gets vampirized (in service of a grand plan, of course) and Ace has to protect him in the middle of a nest of vampires, while worrying about whether he’s really still himself. Blood gets drunk and minds get whammied. But it’s neither depressing nor grim: the author really loves her characters and loves showing off the hard-earned, often-imperiled trust between them. Heimeldat’s Seven and Ace are an unbreakable team, as the Doctor counts on Ace for things he can’t ask of her and she trusts him (mostly) in spite of everything.

(I’ve added the “fandom: books/comics/other” tag because a major plot point draws on Goth Opera, but since it’s an audio now should it be “fandom: big finish”?)

Title: Darkness Becomes You
Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] Heimeldat
Rating: Teen
Word Count/Length/Size: 17,313 words
Creator's Summary: A message from Benny sends the Doctor and Ace to investigate a relaxing mental health spa with a dark secret.
Characters/Pairings: Seventh Doctor, Ace McShane
Warnings/Notes: None

Reasons for reccing: It's a very Doctor Who plot, with the Doctor and Ace investigating a place where something strange is going on. And befriending some other people there who help/hinder them. And it shows the friendship between the Doctor and Ace really well with them having to help each other and deal with what's going on.

Title: Cheating Grief
Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] Heimeldat
Rating: General
Word Count/Length/Size: 3391 words
Creator's Summary: When the chaos settles after Castrovalva, Nyssa finally has time to think about Traken, and the Doctor helps her come to terms with losing her entire world.
Characters/Pairings: Fifth Doctor, Nyssa of Traken, Tegan Jovanka
Warnings/Notes: None

Reasons for reccing: For 1982, when Castrovalva first aired. It's a story of the Doctor getting to know his new self, which is interesting to see. And also comforting Nyssa. It feels exactly like something that must have happened - after all, losing your world is a pretty big thing to deal with.

Title: untitled
Creator: [tumblr.com profile] Heimeldat / [archiveofourown.org profile] Heimeldat
Rating: unrated (I'd give it a strong T for blood)
Word Count/Length/Size: 1 painting
Creator's Summary: a realistic digital painting from the climax of Vampire Science.
Characters/Pairings: Eighth Doctor, Joanna Harris
Warnings/Notes: blood and injury

Reasons for reccing: For the Reccer's Bingo square "injury/illness." This is an excellent rendition of Eight doing what he apparently does best--defeating villains by allowing horrific injury to be inflicted upon himself. Heimeldat's really good at capturing what's compelling about these angsty moments, and I particularly love this painting because it gives a face to Joanna Harris, an otherwise text-only character.

It also completes a line in my Reccer's Bingo!

Title: Smith and Joan
Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] Heimeldat
Rating: General
Word Count/Length/Size: 7075 words
Creator's Summary: Martha is volunteering at a clinic when a woman shows up high out of her mind and babbling nonsense. Only, the stranger seems somehow familiar...
Characters/Pairings: Martha Jones/Mickey Smith, Thirteenth Doctor
Warnings/Notes: None

Reasons for reccing: It's a nice look at where Martha and Mickey are now. And also the Thirteenth Doctor and the fun and chaos that goes on around here. And also how much she cares about her past companions.

Title: Crystal, Fuse, and Mask
Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] Heimeldat
Rating: Teen and up
Word Count/Length/Size: 21675
Creator's Summary: The Doctor and Ace stumble into a secret auction and accidentally end up on the list of talent for hire. Next thing they know, they've been hired as an explosives expert and a psychic manipulator, and their new employer is in a great hurry to launch them into their criminal career.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Seventh Doctor
Warnings/Notes: Canon-typical violence, mind control
Reasons for reccing: This is a very fun adventure fic, featuring a clever plot, some great hurt/comfort moments, and Seven being very scary when Ace is hurt. As per usual, the Doctor and Ace have gotten into some trouble have to work together and trust each other to get out of it. This fic explores their relationship and their trust for each other, while also incorporating a lot of fun undercover tropes. Plus an interesting exploration of the Doctor’s use of mental manipulation in particular.

Note: This was a wonderful giftfic inspired by my prompts for this year's Gen Freeform Exchange. This is also my seventh rec for the "Claim a Character" challenge.
