lurking_latinist: Romana in her Shada dress, looking awed, against a background of space and stars. (fourromana smooch)

Title: Hearts and FLowers
Creator: JJPOR
Rating: All Ages
Word Count/Length/Size: 973 words
Creator's Summary: Love triangles can be a terrible thing, especially when one of the corners is a tin dog.
Characters/Pairings: Fourth Doctor/Romana I
Warnings/Notes: none

Reasons for reccing:
There are surprisingly few actual straight-up Fourth Doctor/Romana I fics. I'm not entirely surprised--I used to headcanon that they didn't get together until between Destiny of the Daleks and City of Death--but, well, *gestures at icon*. But my goal is to rec fics for as many different versions of this pairing as possible, so I wanted to start here.

This fic hits a lot of the notes I love: it's funny, it's sweet, it's restful in the way this pairing can only be when Romana doesn't have the weight of a world on her shoulders yet, it's got K9 in it, there's that hilarious quasi-culture-clash between a Time Lord who's crazy about Earth and a Time Lady who thinks he must be crazy full stop. They're both shy about their feelings in their very different ways but they end up managing to communicate. Partially via poetry.

I've been meaning to post some recs for the Second Doctor gen request for a while, so here are two now to make up for my delay, both of them fabulous historical longfic for the same TARDIS team.

Title: The Spartans
Creator: [personal profile] jjpor | JJPOR
Rating: Teen
Word Count/Length/Size: 69,883 words
Creator's Summary: Greece, 480 BC: As the vast armies of the King of Kings prepare to battle the outnumbered defenders of the Hot Gates, the Doctor and his friends find themselves where they often find themselves at times like this – caught in the middle.
Characters/Pairings: Second Doctor, Jamie McCrimmon, Ben Jackson, Polly Wright
Warnings/Notes: Explicit violence.

Reasons for reccing: It's no secret that JJPOR is still one of my favourite Doctor Who writers and this may be my favourite of his stories. It's basically a full-on attempt at a 60s era historical, although going that little further (like a PDA or MA, save that JJPOR's stuff has far more heart and eventual happy endings) to allow for some of the historical reality. It's vividly written, excellently characterised, well-plotted out, and a real treat.

Title: Reciprocal Quandaries
Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] primsong
Rating: G
Word Count/Length/Size: 30,765
Creator's Summary: Two, Ben, Polly and Jamie pause for a bit of restful holiday at the 1900 Paris Exposition - or so they wished. A 'historic' adventure for one of the Old School teams.
Characters/Pairings: Second Doctor, Ben Jackson, Polly Wright, Jamie McCrimmon
Warnings/Notes: None.

Reasons for reccing: Talking of treats, this is also a long historical 'missing adventure' featuring the very same TARDIS team, but with a much lighter edge. It is a delightful runaround set during the Paris Exposition in 1900, complete with improbable doppelgangers and actual candy floss, and is heaps of fun. I only wish there were more of it!

For the "War & Peace" square on my bingo Card.

Title: A Winter's Tale
Creator: [personal profile] jjpor | JJPOR
Rating: Teen
Word Count/Length/Size: 8164 words
Creator's Summary: In the deep midwinter, frosty winds will blow, but for the Doctor and Ace it's just another day at the office. Or is it?
Characters/Pairings: Seventh Doctor, Ace McShane
Warnings/Notes: Brief bit of swearing.

Reasons for reccing: It's a bit unseasonal perhaps, but it was the fic I thought of immediately on seeing the prompt. Ace doesn't do Christmas, but the Doctor wants to change that, and goes about it in his usual twisty sort of way, taking her back to a certain moment in the trenches in WWI. It's just perfect in so many ways, from the characterisation of the two of them, the treatment of the historical period, and manages to be properly aww-worthy without being in the least bit treacly or sentimental. If you haven't read any of JJPOR's stuff before, you've been missing out.
