Those interested in a slightly different take on the early years of Who and a view of the universe that is considerably older than the 745 years the Hartnell Doctor was supposed to carry might find the book interesting. (If nothing else, you could test your knowledge of sixties culture on the chapter headings; they’re all song titles or lyrics or film titles from ’67 or before. There is a note at the end to identify them for anyone who cares, but I’d advise against reading it beforehand if you wish to avoid a fairly major spoiler towards the end.)

Oh, and about the title. I know. It was a working title, and it kind of stuck. Be grateful; I did consider calling it "Barbara Cutaway".

Warnings/Notes: This fic was written before Peter Capaldi was chosen for the role of the Twelfth Doctor, so the Twelfth and Thirteenth Doctors who make an appearance in this fic are entirely original.

Reasons for reccing: This fic is just utterly beautiful and genius. The characterization is absolutely phenomenal and the writer does a brilliant job of creating their personalities and voices. The dialogue sound exactly like what these characters would say (for the characters I’m familiar with anyway). And the Doctors who I am unfamiliar with (2-8) are written so strongly that with minimal background knowledge they are just so clearly and beautifully crafted. This is the type of fic that I could easily see being a published Doctor Who work and its written so well and has such a beautiful concept that I could see it as a TV Christmas special (if getting all the actors wasn’t so difficult lol). Every line in this fic is just incredible. It’s one of my all time favorite Doctor Who fics and certainly my favorite Christmas-themed Doctor Who fic. This fic is a masterpiece to put it simply and I have no hesitation when I say that.

Reasons for reccing: This is a really lovely and haunting fic where the writer decides to fill in the blanks and tell us why Susan and the Doctor had to flee Gallifrey all those years ago. I love how the writer chooses to write this fic and the tone they maintain throughout—I think they found a very clever and fitting way of using Susan and the Doctor's names when they don't yet use them through the use of brackets that helps add to the tone. I love the author's characterization of Susan and I feel like this fic adds a new dimension to her character. She and the Doctor were atypical Time Lords and this fic really explores that and how they were isolated and ostracized on Gallifrey. It's a great story that is fantastically told with solid characterization. I think it is a slightly eerie tone that reminds me of the first episode, "An Unearthly Child."

It was hard to choose which one to rec here as there are a whole lot I love already, done in different styles, but where better to begin than at the beginning? And this might be my favourite piece so far. I love the composition, with all the negative space and the careful use of colour. It really does manage to signify the start of a truly epic adventure, and the hope that goes with the Doctor and the TARDIS.

Reasons for reccing: I'm a sucker for "Twelfth Doctor Apology Tour" fics where he goes around fixing all the things that his previous selves did wrong, and this is a good example of that kind of fic with the Doctor visiting many of his past companions (both modern and classic) while he's stuck in Bristol. The ending may or may not have made me tear up a bit.

Reasons for reccing: It does what it says on the tin, and very well indeed. All the canon details are neatly translated into the new setting, as governess Barbara Wright's latest position proves to be a very curious one indeed. What could be the answer to the riddle of her young charge and her reclusive grandfather?
