Title: An Irksome Word and Task
Creator: Cryptile
Rating: All Ages
Word Count/Length/Size: 9529 words
Creator's Summary: The stars are going out all over Creation, and he's at a Christmas party. In Lannet.
Characters/Pairings: The Scream of the Shalka Doctor, Alison Cheney
Warnings/Notes: Swearing (author's warning); also discussion of alcoholism, and general bleakness.
Reasons for reccing: For 2003, the brief glorious heyday of Richard E. Grant's Doctor (well, one of them), here's an existentially devastating Christmas story! The increasingly dark adventures the Doctor and Alison have been having in some version of the Time War make a gorgeous contrast with the stifling mundanity (if you're the Doctor)/reassuring normality (if you're Alison) of Alison's aunt's Christmas party, and then it goes just a little bit meta. This version of the Doctor is troubled, mercurial, witty, desperate; he cares too much to cope; it makes me wish they'd made more of the webcasts, except they wouldn't have been this story. This fic is hard for me to rec because everything I say about it just makes it sound depressing and strange. And it is depressing and strange. But in a good way. And the Doctor is really awkward at this Christmas party.
