Time for
tardis_library's next seasonal challenge, which will be the first of our special anniversary challenges!
60th Anniversary Manifesto Challenge
"So... all of time and space, everything that ever happened or ever will - where do you want to start?"
Now that the 60th is approaching, it's the perfect time to run a manifesto challenge! For this one, we'll all be show-casing Doctor Who as a whole. Over the coming few months, we'll probably want to celebrate, explain or sell Doctor Who to others in fandom and manifestos can be a brilliant way to do that.
So, we're going to have fun, celebrate our show and some of its amazing fanworks and hopefully also create manifestos that will be helpful resources for ourselves and others in the fandom when we're trying to explain our love for this most random and wonderful of TV shows!
Don't be put off by the broad take on this - it's fine to keep your manifesto as simple and short as you want. Essays are welcome but not at all essential.
You could pick favourite fanworks that you think work as great intros and write up your blurb around them, or pick some that can be read without canon knowledge, or similar themed rec-sets, or maybe talk about your favourite part(s) of the show, using recs that showcase those, or ways to get into the fandom, or how you got into it yourself. What is it you love the most about the show - its go-anywhere nature, the Doctor and their companions, time-travel, the humour, the monsters, the edge of magic? Focus on that! Or do a brief overview, plus one rec per era. Be as serious or as light as you wish. It really is up to you what you want to do and I'm not going to be prescriptive about it.
To count for the challenge, your manifesto must include at least one short paragraph of write-up or 'blurb' or meta about Doctor Who itself plus 3-15 recs (min-max), each with at least a brief line as to why you're reccing them. The manifesto can also include images, gifs, vid embeds (fanvids/clips/trailers/reactions), episode/audio/book (etc) recs, links, related resources, communities, fandom sites etc. as you please. There are no minimums or maximums as to word length but you will need to fit it all in one post, so if you manage to hit the Dreamwidth post limit, it's time to cut back at least some of the squee!
"Let me get this straight. A thing that looks like a police box, standing in a junkyard, it can move anywhere in time and space?"
What is a Manifesto?
Manifestos are less usual these days, but they were a common and generally pretty great part of LJ fandom life. People do still make them, they just tend to call them primer or promo posts - and there are a bunch of them posted to AO3, too. They are a way to introduce or promote a fandom, ship or character that you love. Don't be scared off by the name! It's basically just a wonderful excuse to blather on about something you love.
A manifesto usually includes some blurb on what you like about your chosen topic, what people might expect from that canon, ship or character, and things you hope will lure them into the fandom.
We have a manifesto tag here, so you can see what everyone produced last time tardis_library had a manifesto challenge, if that helps.
het_reccers (LJ) used to have regular challenges and has a masterlist of (character, fandom & pairing) manifestos you can browse through. I've borrowed some of the typical formatting used for that (regular manifestos don't have to include fanwork recs, although they often do). Or check out the archive at
ship_manifesto or any other manifesto comms/archives here on Dreamwidth. Plus, there's a Ship Manifesto tag on AO3 (and also a Fandom Primer one, even if not yet canonical.)
Unlike our usual recs, manifestos count as fanworks in themselves, so feel free to crosspost to AO3 if you want, although please make sure you still post in full to
tardis_library. (N.B. AO3 have some different rules regarding image hosting etc. so if crossposting, double check none of your content will break their Terms Of Service.)
How It Works
1. You don't need to sign-up for this challenge, but if you want to unofficially in the comments for accountability or to talk about your ideas for tackling it, please do!
Don't worry about duplicating recs or anything like that for this challenge.
2. When ready, post your manifesto. You can post it any time you choose between now and the 16th of July. Please do try not to all post them on the last day! Unlike our usual challenges, you can put it all into one single post (although if you feel inspired you're very welcome to make more than one manifesto!)
Please use the coding below or equivalent, so that your manifesto has a brief header of its own and each individual fanwork rec still has an appropriate header for info. (The coding allows for five recs, but cut/c+p as desired.)
The challenge ends on Sunday July 16th 2023.
If you have any other questions about this challenge, just ask in the comments, or PM the mod.
