I claimed Liz Shaw for the Character Challenge, so here is my first rec for it (& about time):

Title: Going Home
Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] phantomlistener
Rating: Teen
Word Count/Length/Size: 8143 words
Creator's Summary: A life can't be summed in a few tiny moments, but it can, possibly, be understood. Elizabeth Shaw through the years. Crossover with the Dr Who spin-off P.R.O.B.E. but no prior knowledge of it is required.
Characters/Pairings: Liz Shaw, Third Doctor, Patricia Haggard, Sarah Jane Smith, Brigadier Lethbrige-Stewart.
Warnings/Notes: None.

Reasons for reccing: This is a beautifully written look at Liz across her life, filling in backstory, post-canon and side-adventures with insight and depth. It was one of the first pieces I thought of when I claimed the character. It includes some mention of the fanmade PROBE videos, but it works just fine if you don't know them, as the author says. (I haven't seen any of them myself, so I can vouch for that). If you love Liz, you'll love this.

On the Blu-ray for Spearhead from Space there is a lovely special feature about the life of Caroline John who played Liz Shaw. It featured interviews with her husband (Geoffrey Beevers who played the decaying Master in The Keeper of Traken), her daughter, and her sister (Priscilla John who is a casting director on a ton of films). She seemed such an interesting woman.

Liz Shaw was one of those rare companions who really broke out of the mold. She was an actual character with a life and will of her own. So capable, intelligent, and interesting.
