Notes/warnings/spoilers I've tried to stay as spoiler-free as possible, and when I've mentioned events in the series I've kept it vague.

About

For a ton of information, there's The Sarah Jane Adventures Wiki

The Sarah Jane Adventures (often abbreviated to SJA) is a Doctor Who spin-off series aimed at children. It ran from 2007 to 2011. It has an hour-long pilot, four series that each have five two-part half hour long episodes, and one series with three two-part half hour long episodes. Although there were plans for more episodes, the series was ended by the death of the star, Elisabeth Sladen.

There was a lockdown webcast Farewell, Sarah Jane which features many Doctor Who companions at Sarah Jane's funeral.

All of the episodes are available on DVD and the iPlayer.

Why you should watch it

Despite its title character being from Classic Who, and a few cameos from Doctor Who characters, no knowledge of Doctor Who is required to enjoy SJA. I've also made sure none of the recs involve any Doctor Who knowledge, but obviously there is a lot of fic out there that crosses over with Doctor Who, and Torchwood and other spin-offs.

There's no need to be a child either! Doctor Who was also originally aimed at children. SJA is aimed at slightly younger children, but doesn't shy away from adult concepts. But a lot of its main cast are teenagers and they do have a tendency to get gunked. It's delightful and easy to watch. And despite the danger and cliffhangers, you know all of the main characters will always be safe, which makes it a comfort watch. And it's main theme is how space might be great, but life on Earth is an adventure too.

The stories generally revolve around the team defeating aliens and not letting anyone else know what's happened. Although sometimes they only narrowly save the Earth, everything is treated as a great adventure. None of the main characters ever want to stop what they're doing.

Why it's an intro to Doctor Who

If there's an aspect of Doctor Who (or any of it at all) that you haven't seen, then this a good intro to it. It has the same basic idea as Doctor Who itself: there are aliens out there that want to do nefarious things on Earth. Or good things. Doctor Who just includes other planets and other times, so expands on the universe we see in SJA, with a little added jeopardy with the possibility of being stuck on another planet or in another time.

Also the world of SJA is one that any of could find ourselves in. With SJA, the theme is that life on Earth is an adventure and anyone could find themselves in that world, meeting aliens. In Doctor Who most of the companions are contemporary humans, so anyone could imagine the TARDIS appearing and themselves getting to travel with the Doctor.

It's also a good way to get into the parts of Doctor Who that various characters in SJA were in. Never seen Classic Who? Start with Sarah Jane's era and see what she was like when she was younger and how she ended up in this world. Or you've seen episodes with the Brigadier or Jo Jones (née Grant) or K9, you can go back and watch the Classic Who episodes they're in.

Or you haven't seen New Who, but you enjoyed the Tenth and/or Eleventh Doctor's guest appearances, then why not see more of their episodes? Want to know more about UNIT? They're in both Classic Who and New Who.

The history

Sarah (as she was known then) is a journalist who originally appeared with the Third and Fourth Doctors in the mid-70s. In 1981 Doctor Who's first spin-off, K9 And Company, includes Sarah receiving a present of K9, a robot dog, from the Doctor. The spin-off doesn't make it past the pilot.

Then comes School Reunion, a Tenth Doctor episode, where Sarah is investigating a strange occurrence at a school, as is the Doctor and Rose. The Doctor repairs the now-broken K9 and Sarah declines to travel with him again.

This episode is pretty much thought of as a precursor to SJA, since it involves Sarah Jane investigating aliens, which is pretty much what SJA is all about.

Spin-offs

Ten audiobooks were released, coming out at the rate of two per series. You can find these on Audible as a Complete Collection.

Big Finish recently released a box set starring Rani (along with Clyde and Gita) called Rani Takes on the World. Another one will be released at the end of the year.

Main characters

Sarah Jane Smith

Sarah Jane Smith
You may have noticed that sometimes she's called Sarah and sometimes she's called Sarah Jane. This is because during her run in Doctor Who she was generally referred to as Sarah. By SJA she prefers to go by Sarah Jane. This means that in the real world, she's sometimes referred to as Sarah and sometimes Sarah Jane.

I've already mentioned her backstory, since it's also SJA's backstory. By the time we meet her she's still out investigating aliens, and making friends with friendly aliens. And also doing the odd bit of journalism to pay the bills.

In the first episode she meets Maria, who moves in across the road, and adopts Luke. This starts her on a path of saving the world with teenagers.

Mr Smith

Mr Smith
Mr Smith appears to be a computer that folds out of a wall in the attic with fanfare when he hears the phrase "Mr Smith, I need you". He is a font of all knowledge, can scan objects, trap people in the place, and engage in banter. Also, he's not a computer, he's a Xylok, an alien that looks like a crystal.

Luke Smith

Luke Smith
Luke is human, but he was created by an alien race called the Bane. He's born in the pilot episode, but appears to be a teenager. He's very intelligent, but has no idea about pop culture or really how to be a human. Had the series continued he would have been revealed to be gay.

Maria Jackson

Maria Jackson
When Maria's parents divorce she moves in across the road from Sarah Jane. She gets curious about odd events at Sarah Jane's house, investigates, and ended up discovering the truth about aliens. She leaves the series when her father gets a job in America and she goes with him.

Clyde Langer

Clyde Langer
Clyde is the joker, never afraid to make a pun. And also taking it upon himself to teach Luke pop culture. He also turns out to be good with babies, as he entertains the baby Sky. He's good at art and uses the team's adventures as basis for his comics.

Rani Chandra

Rani Chandra
Rani and her family move in to Maria's old house. Rani wants to be a journalist, so naturally wants to get to know Sarah Jane. In the Big Finish audios, she's taken up Sarah Jane's mantle and is still investigating alien occurrences.

Sky Smith

Sky Smith
Sky appears human, but was actually a bomb. Like Luke she's intelligent but without much knowledge about humans, and is adopted by Sarah Jane. She has an ability to manipulate electricity.

Recurring characters

K9

K9
K9 is a robot dog. He performs much the same function as Mr Smith, and the two of them argue about it.

Alan & Chrissie Jackson

Alan Jackson Chrissie Jackson
Maria's parents. At first they're oblivious to the alien comings and goings, but eventually they find out and play their part in defeating them. There's a running joke of Chrissie getting Sarah Jane's name wrong - she says two names, never getting both (or sometimes either) of them right.

Haresh and Gita Chandra

Haresh and Gita Chandra
Rani's parents. Haresh is the school head, much to Clyde's displeasure, since he's not great at school. Gita is very bubbly and poking her nose into Sarah Jane's life, but without ever finding out the whole truth. She also has a running joke of getting Sarah Jane's name wrong - always calling her Sarah.

Mrs Wormwood

Mrs Wormwood
Not as human as she looks, she's one of the Bane from the pilot episode. She made Luke.

The Trickster

The Trickster
An immortal being, who keeps coming back to cause chaos for Sarah Jane, by doing such things as wiping her from history.

The ships recs

Sarah Jane/the Doctor

This is the biggest ship. A lot of these concern her time in Doctor Who, but there are still plenty set in SJA canon. I feel like the Tenth Doctor is the one most shipped with her, but it's possible to find fic with her shipped with pretty much every Doctor.

Clyde/Luke

The biggest slash ship, although Luke/Sanjay (made canon in Farewell, Sarah Jane) comes second.

Characters/Pairings: Clyde Langer/Luke Smith, Rani Chandra, Maria Jackson
Warnings/Notes: None

Reasons for reccing: (I've recced the podfic of this, but not the original fic) This fic ramps up the tension between Clyde and Luke and whether they'll get together or screw it up completely.

Link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/464513

Sarah Jane/Maria

The biggest femslash ship, it generally involves a teenage Maria having a crush on Sarah Jane or set in the future when Maria is an adult.

Title: Traditional Christmas
Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] JohnAmendAll
Rating: General
Word Count/Length/Size: 5750 words
Creator's Summary: On Sky's first Christmas shopping trip, the gang run into an old acquaintance. And visiting Santa's grotto doesn't seem to be as harmless as it ought to be.
Characters/Pairings: Sarah Jane Smith, Luke Smith, Sky Smith, Rani Chandra, Clyde Langer, Kelsey Hooper
Warnings/Notes: None

Reasons for reccing: Another one I've recced before, but it's reminiscent of a typical episode. If you're thinking about watching SJA, but don't have long, it might be worth reading this fic.

Link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/141152

Title: Star Wars on Bannerman Road
Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] tpgigger
Rating: General
Word Count/Length/Size: 772 words
Creator's Summary: Luke is home for the holidays, so it's time to work on Sky's pop culture education.
Characters/Pairings: Luke Smith, Sky Smith, Rani Chandra, Clyde Langer
Warnings/Notes: None

Reasons for reccing: This is a fun story, but also a typical one of Sky (in this case) learning more about pop culture.

Link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/302115

Title: Pour, Rinse, Repeat
Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] empyrean
Rating: General
Word Count/Length/Size: 1770 words
Creator's Summary: Or, five ways Carla Langer and Sarah Jane Smith didn’t have tea – and one way they did. Carla watches Clyde grow up, and tries to have a cuppa with the person she reckons is responsible. Without much success.
Characters/Pairings: Carla Langer, Sarah Jane Smith, Clyde Langer, Eleventh Doctor, Luke Smith, Rani Chandra
Warnings/Notes: None

Reasons for reccing: This is a great use of an underused character. This fic makes me wish we'd seen much more of her. It's also interesting to see the goings on from the point of view of a character who has no idea what is really going on.

Link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/138563

Title: Goldenrods
Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] edna_blackadder
Rating: General
Word Count/Length/Size: 1583 words
Creator's Summary: After the events of ‘Goodbye, Sarah Jane Smith,’ Gita stops by for tea.
Characters/Pairings: Gita Chandra, Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings/Notes: None

Reasons for reccing: This is a sweet fic which focuses in Gita, who doesn't know what's going on, but can see something is. In the episodes she's often played for laughs, but this fic shows how much she really cares.

Link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/1094954

Title: These Little Things
Creator: MinervaFan
Rating: All Ages
Word Count/Length/Size: 1850 words
Creator's Summary: Sometimes it just takes the end of the world to get people's attention.
Characters/Pairings: Alan Jackson, Chrissie Jackson
Warnings/Notes: None

Reasons for reccing: Similar to the previous two recs in that it's focusing on the kid's parents, but these two have a sweetness to them, despite their divorce, and also have more of an idea of what's really going on. It also shows what interesting characters they are.
