Reasons for reccing: No Doubt's song "I'm Just a Girl" is a tribute to women who are sick and tired of being pigeonholed, told they are powerless, and told that they should go through their lives being afraid. Being afraid, and being menaced by monsters, used to be a large part of the job for a Doctor's (female) companion, and Sarah Jane underwent her fair share of those moments, yet she was never pigeonholed, she was never powerless, and while she was indeed sometimes afraid, her fear always held a core of bravery at its heart. Sarah Jane's job may be to be menaced, but she's not going to put up with it -- and the video shows us how, through it all, she manages to stay true to herself. As Sarah herself once put it: "There's nothing 'only' about being a girl!"

Rec [fic]: Orbit, by kindkit

Reasons for reccing: A beautiful little story of Jamie discovering romantic feelings for the Doctor and acting upon them; one of my favourite stories for this ship, despite being only a few hundred words. It's one of these lovely stories that fits incredibly much into startlingly few words - the way it describes Jamie's feelings about "the future" and all the things he's found because of the Doctor, and what the Doctor means to him, they fit Jamie perfectly and says so much about him. The way in which the romance part unfolds is understated yet gorgeous, sweet and subtly emotional.

I'm glad that looking for a variety of fics to rec for my character claim led me back to this one, because I read it (probably a few times over!) when I'd first discovered Two/Jamie fanfic, but I hadn't bookmarked it, and now I found it again. *hugs fic*

Reasons for reccing: Jamie being introduced to the music of the Beatles! Not only is this another lovely "Jamie meets modernity" fic and slice-of-life aboard the TARDIS, but I also love Polly and Jamie bonding via music. The author's characterization of Polly, and the easy-going friendship between her and Jamie feels so right, and the story gives me all kinds of feels about the power of music.
