Mini-Manifesto: Identity, Continuity, and Change [contains four recs]

Manifesto Title: Mini-Manifesto: Identity, Continuity, and Change
Creator: [personal profile] felis
Notes/warnings/spoilers: Stays pretty vague, but contains a few details regarding the Tenth and Twelfth Doctors in the recs section.

My challenge to myself: not to rec anything that has been recced here before and since that includes a lot of classics and personal favourites, i.e. exactly the recs you'd gravitate towards for a manifesto, this rather stumped me for a while. And then [tumblr.com profile] sparrowlucero posted their latest piece of fanart (see first rec below) and I got an idea: I could choose a few recs that highlight the themes of continuity and change in Doctor Who.

While not originally conceived that way, the fact that the Doctor got the ability to regenerate, to change their face and parts of their personality every couple of seasons, means that the show and its main character can constantly reinvent themselves, keep some aspects and introduce new ones, revive things that were discarded some time ago and let go of others for a while. This mix of familiarity and novelty is something I love about it, and it gives every era and every Doctor their own flavour and focus.
What's more, there often tends to be a period of disorientation and finding themselves after a regeneration, when the new Doctor has to figure out who they are - and usually, they don't do it by themselves: they already have or quickly gain companions, who function as friends and foils and mirrors, and who often go on journeys of change and discovery themselves.

Below, four recs in four different mediums that highlight different aspects of this process of change and continuity, with some more commentary.

Title: And now it’s time for one last bow / Like all your other selves [Art]
Creator: [tumblr.com profile] sparrowlucero
Rating: Gen
Creator's Summary: And now it’s time for one last bow / Like all your other selves
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor I.-XIII.
Warnings/Notes: none

Reasons for reccing: Centering on Thirteen's regeneration scene, this beautiful piece of art surrounds her with the all her previous (numbered) faces. All of them, including her, have their eyes closed, and while their facial expressions faintly reflect their state of mind during their regeneration, there's an overall mix of peacefulness and sadness pervading this, the moment of saying goodbye to a regeneration, but also knowing that this is how things go and that there's a new one around the corner. As always, the art style is gorgeous and unique and there are many little details and easter eggs to discover - starting with the change of seasons in the background and not at all ending with the rose next to the Ninth Doctor or the raven next to the Twelfth.

Title: Tenth Doctor: The Musical [Vid]
Creator: Di(ana) Wey ([youtube.com profile] di0br)
Rating: Teen
Word Count/Length/Size: 6:57 minutes
Creator's Summary: n/a
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, Rose Tyler, Martha Jones, Donna Noble, Jack Harkness, Simm!Master, Ninth Doctor
Warnings/Notes: none

Reasons for reccing: This is probably a fandom classic and I was surprised it hadn't been recced yet: a medley vid that covers the whole of the Tenth Doctor's era, appropriately ending on a version of "Changes". (It is also by far the most spoiler-y of the four recs here, depicting all the major plot points and moments in the Tenth Doctor's run.) It covers the experience of change within one Doctor's era - a Doctor in particular who was, in some ways, the most human of the New Who Doctors, and also the one who struggled with loss and with the idea of regeneration more than others. At the same time, the framing device, i.e. the Ninth Doctor watching and reacting to his future self's story, also adds a rather funny meta layer, highlighting - together with the brief appearance of Eleven - that Ten is but one in a row of Doctors.

Title: the contents of theseus' toolbox [Fic]
Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] TechnicolorRevel
Rating: Teen
Word Count/Length/Size: 5.553 words
Creator's Summary: One of the Doctor's tools falls down a vent. It goes on a bit of a journey.
Characters/Pairings: the Tardis, all Doctors from First to Thirteenth, War Doctor, Donna Noble, Ace McShane, Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, Bill Potts, Peri Brown, Sarah Jane Smith, Harry Sullivan, Rose Tyler, Susan Foreman; Doctor/Tardis
Warnings/Notes: none

Reasons for reccing: Another thing in the show that changes all time and stays the same all at once: the Tardis. Non-linear, telepathic, sentient, and not just bigger but infinite on the inside. This is a lovely fic that follows a repair tool on its way through the Tardis and through the eras of the show, encountering Doctors and companions on its way, all of it bracketed by the Thirteenth Doctor and held together by the Doctor's relationship with the Tardis.

Title: [An Observation about Clara and the Doctor in Deep Breath] [Meta]
Creator: [tumblr.com profile] artronenergy
Rating: Gen
Word Count/Length/Size: three GIFs, roughly 600 words
Creator's Summary: n/a
Characters/Pairings: Twelfth Doctor & Clara Oswald (can be read as shippy, but doesn't have to be)
Warnings/Notes: none

Reasons for reccing: This is only a small, informal bit of meta, but it touches on something I adored about the Twelfth Doctor: his struggle with his own identity. For him, trying to figure out who he was and what was important to him was a much longer process than for other Doctors and being seen and reflected back by his companion was a key component of it. The meta only comments on his very first episode, "Deep Breath", and talks about masks and choosing faces, about what the Doctor chooses to show and what to hide and how complicated it can be to be the companion of a thousand-year-old eccentric alien, seeing the continuity in a changed face. Less deflection, but more mess to deal with for this regeneration, in short.

"Right now, I’m a stranger to myself. There’s echoes of who I was, and a sort of... call towards who I am, and I have to hold my nerve and trust all these new instincts, shape myself towards them. I’ll be fine. In the end. Hopefully. Well, I have to be, because you guys need help and if there's one thing I'm certain of: when people need help, I never refuse.”

I'm glad! It's lovely, and I very much enjoyed the fic, too. XD

(Btw - and apologies if this is a weird question - if for any reason you don't want a completion banner, you can let me know and I won't make you any. Not making banners is the easiest! Anyway, if not, please ignore this and carry on. Just thought I ought to ask - they're only intended as encouragement/reward for those who like that kind of thing; the last thing i'd want is them getting in anyone's way.)
